O'Brien hangs up firefighting gear after 38 years
Gerard Croaos

"You get to know when there's
a time," said long-time fire chief,
Mike O'Brien. "You can only
sleep with one foot on the floor
for so long."
As of December 31, O'Brien
is officially retired from his
role as fire chief, capping 38
years of volunteer service to
the community.
Joining the force in 1970,
O'Brien said he made the
decision . along with fellow
,, fire-fighter Rick Sowerby.
However, he added both his fa-
ther-in-law and his brother are
firefighters, so it came natural
to him.
He'said looking back, it's not
the fires that stand out. It's not
the tragedy or the danger that
stays in his mind.
What O'Brien said he will
miss most is the transformation
he sees in new firefighters.
"It's seeing some young fel-
low come into the fire depart-
ment and making men out of
them," he said. ".There's young
fellows there that have grown
into being officers."
He said he's seen many
young men become not only
good firefighters, but family
men and men who care about
their community. Although, he
admits, "All little boys like to
jump on red trucks, I guess."
He said fighting fires is equal

FESTIVE SEASON WRAPS UP
The festive season ,has come to
a close and the results in Huron
County were pretty positive, ac-
cording to OPP. In total, more than
28,000 vehicles were checked in
Huron County RIDE checkpoints,
including the dozen checkpoints set
up from New Year's Eve through
the weekend. In total, nine impaired
drivers were charged in Huron
County during the Festive RIDE
season. Another 20 had their licenc-
es suspended for 12 hours due to
their level of alcohol consumption.
Again, during the Festive RIDE
season, Huron OPP investigated 12

collisions involving personal injury
and another 141 where only prop-
erty was damaged. Although the
OPP responded to numerous colli-
sions in the .first four days of 2009
in Huron County, they reported no
life threatening injuries or fatalities.
Huron OPP Detachment Com-
mander Dan Grant `reminds mo-
torists that winter is far from over
and road conditions will continue
. to pose challenges for many more
weeks. He urges motorists to re-
member that conditions in this
county change very rapidly and
drivers need to remain fully focused
on the task of driving:
