{i'1ie Kingstonr British Whig re
cords the death' by drowning of
Frank V. Samwell, au Exeter Old
Boy. It says in part:
"Frank V, Sanie ell, one of King-
ston's widely known youngbusiness
nnen, met death by accidental drown-
ing on Monday afternoon while fish-
ing off the Syndicate wharf about
ort®'mile west of the villa; e of Co
fins' Bay. The body was discovered

A
the wharf at '3:8 0 p.m.
It was, a case .of accidental drown-
ing as shown. by the circumstances
learned by the ',Whig. Mr. Samwell
was alone fishi Z off the wharf, and
apparently fell -or stumbled off into.
the water, and being 'unable to swim,
and encumbered' with the weight of
his clothing and rain coat, sank
without being able to call for help.
Mr, Samwell had b making
d een m ng
fishing trips to Collins' Bay on' an
averageof twice a week all season,
and on Monday had intended taking
his wife with ,him, but the rainy af=
ternoon interfered.
The first.Z.trews of the drowning
came to the police station before
four o'clock, a,nressage stating that
a body had been found in the water
.= a:nd that the automobile near by was
thought to be that of Mr. Samwell of
Kingston. Alderman W. A. Stroud,
brother-in-law, accompanied Frank
Reid to the scene and the body was
indentified ]Iis watch was stopped at
)2:50 o'clock, so it is presumed that
the accident occurred very shortly
after he left Capt. Gimblett.
The circumstances were investiga-
ted by County' Constable Hornbeck
within a short' time after the occur-
rence, and he stated that the wharf,
— which he inspected, was in bad coal,
dition, much of the timber rotten,
making it dangerous to anyone not
thoroughly familiar with the ground.
He was convinced that Mr. Samwell
slipped or stumbled into the water
,and sankbefore he could e.ummon
aid. A torn sole of his shoe showed
this. Dr. E. Mundell, coroner, on
being informed of the drowning, in-
,, estigated all the circumstances and
decided that an inquest was unneces-
sary. The late M. Samwell was thir-
.tyfive y:ears,"";:k;-age_ He was ,some`
years in business, in-,K4ngston, (Wal-
ing in hardware under the name of
Dominion Supply. . Company. He is
survived by his wife, and three small
children, his mother, Mrs. T. J. Lock-
hart, a half-sister, Miss Kathleen
Lockhart, this city, and one sister,
Mrs. A. Elmer, Montreal.
