FIND NO TRACE OP POISONING.

lin on April 1st into the circum-
stances surrounding the ,death . of
Daniel Hastings, whose widow' "con-
fessed" she poisoned hint with
strychnine tablets, the doct8'rs-'mho
performed the post-mortem 'examin-
ation stated that. they were unable
to find any signs ,of. strychnine,"pois-
oning effects. The inquiry was ad-
journed until the ' report from the
provincial analyst on the contents of
the deceased's stomach could, be
obtained. :,-
Drs. Murray and Smith testified;
that while they discovered no signs
of poisoning, they found congestion
of the lungs indicated, and said that
this condition seemed to be chronic
with Mr. Hastings. Dr. Murray also
said 15 ordinary strychnine tablets
would be required to cause' death,
whereas only two were given, ac-
acording to Mrs. Hastings;
Witnesses stated that the deceas-
ed had been suffering from a cold,
and had been taking cough medicine
prescribed for him by a Seaforth
doctor. He had taken a dose, of it
just before he went to hiS bed for
the last time.
Constable, Ingram 'and ° several
neighbors of the Hastings family tes-
tified at the resumed hearing, over
Which Coroner Armstrong presided.
The neighbors stated that they had
been present when, Hastings died,
and he exhibited no symptoms of
poisoning as far as they know. The
undertaker gave evidence that the,
body had been received by him in,
the usual way, and there was not
.the slightest suspicion Of irregular.
ity.
Mrs. Hastings, who is still 'in jail
in St.artford, was represented by 7
Richardson.

s.ion of •the'inquest' was April 12, be-
fore which time the 'report or the
provincial analyst is expected to be
