A pleasant hour was spent and a nice sum real- ized. The choir of the church have planned to provide a short musical programme at the close of the Sun- day evening services. Last Sunday duetts were rendered d by Misses. Wanda Willis and Helen Hodgins, and Mr. F. Taylor and Miss V. Neil; and a solo by Mr. Andrew Hicks. Mrs. Chas. Fantail won the bean- guessing contest, her guess being 2,250. Mr. Wickenson was second with 2275, and Arthur Robinson third with 2286.• The correct num- ber was 2238. The 1st prize was a live rooster, donated by Parsons - Davis; the second, salt and pepper shakers, and the third, a box of chocolates. • The frequent repetition of Adver- tising produces familiarity. Every- body was pleased- to see Viola look- ing so well. She returned to Normal at London on Monday with the best wishes of everybody around here. A sad fatality occurred Iast week, Mr. Parnaby let his month-old chicks out for a run and they made for some decayed apples and got so full of bronlo-seltzer that more than half of them were intoxicated and two of the hilarious crowd died of delirium tremens. The dramaticplay, entitled "The New Schoolma'nl," given in the Sun- shine Methodist Church on Monday night'by the Woodham Epworth League was a; splendid rendition and gave much enjoyment to the Iarge audience. Every part was taken to perfection, and it would be unfair' to single out any member for special mention when all contributed so well to make the play so effective. Mr. Fletcher will be greatly missed in this neighborhood after having been so long with us, •. The induction of the new pastor of the Presbyterian church, Rev. Chidley, 'will take place on Thurs- day. This ceremony will no doubt be very largely attended The farmers are getting busy on the 'land these fine days. Tile .land is drying up very rapidly giving the farmers a good beginning at seed- ing operations. Lucan Word was recc_veu here of the death of Mrs. Sara Davis, o Mo.pse Jaw, Sask., after three days' illness. following a paralytic stroke. De- ceased was the widow of the late James Davis, and had been` a resi- dent of this village for 20 years, leaving for the West after the death of her husband about two years ago. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mclean, Drinkwater, Sask.; and Mrs. Teetzel, Alberta, and one son, James, also in the West. Inter inent took place at St. Thomas on: March 30. Mr. Kent has sold his dairy farm at the east end of the village to Win.. Langford, of London Township. Ed. Webb has sold his farm, part of which is within the village limits, Leopold Hodgins being the purchas- er. The price was $11,000. What might have been a serious accident happened one day last week when the team of Mr. J. Decher, Jr.,, became beyond control in front of the Walper House, and Mr. Decher then quickly headed them off toward the hotel sheds and in doing so the wagon came in contact. with Mr. J. Gascho, Sr., mail courier of route 3, who was just returning. The lat- ter's closed buggy being overturned and Mr. Gascho managed to crawl out, and fortunately no damage or injury was done. Mrs, Hartry, Wife of William. Hartry, of Seaforth, vice-president of the Ontario Horticultural: So- ciety, dropped dead at her home on Tuesday night of last week from heart failure. She had been feeling unusually well' and had been out making calls that afternoon. A ph'''Ssician Was summoned, but life was extinct when he arrived. J. Davidson, of Bayfield, a Bridge- man employed by, the bridge and building department of the Grand Trunk Railway at East London, was seriously injured when he was knocked from the derrick on which he was working and struck hist head against the trucks of a near -by car. Dr. F. R. Clegg was called and nine stitches were necessary to close the wound. DIAMOND WEDDING OF HURON COUNTY COUPLE. SEAFO'RTH, March 29.—Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith, two well-known and highly -respected residents of Hulett. Township, celebrated their diamond wedding at their home this afternoon, where,' about 70 guests, including their children, grandchil- clren . and great-grandchildren were assembled. , Mr. and Mrd. Smith were married in 1861 by the Rey,, William Gra- ham, ` of Egiilondvilie, and spent the 'first seven years of their married life on a farm -in Tuckersinith.
