The main point to note at the mo
• ment is that ever so slight' a rise in
blood pressure is attended by a senee
of exhilaratioe and well-being, This
increase in blood preseure is a resul
of diminished atmospheric pressure
indicated by a falling loarometer.
This explains hauch of the oxhilara
tion attendant on residence in high
alitudes, and the -bracing effects and
popularity of Alpine wihter sports.
It h,as been 'euggested that -a high
barometer causes increased pressure
of air in the lungs, with a consequent
_augmentation of aeration • and rapid
brtaitiag up and elimination of the
hadY's waste matters. But this idea
fails to take account of the fact that
the higher you go and - the more the
• atnioepherie pressure diminishes, the
poorer in Oxygen the air becomes.
A Word to the Wise. -
On the other hand, a fall:in the pres-
sure of the atmeephere is atended by
a fall—it may bevery slight—in your
blood pressure,' so that exhilaration
-
gives place to depression. This used
• to be accounted for by t -he fact -that
the usually humid air or actual wet
weather which follows a fall of the
_barorneter allowed of very rapid con-
duction away from the body of that
"animal electricity" Of -which we know
so little and hoar so much. •
But whatever the scientific explana-
tion of these things may be We feel
mare physically (and therefore men-
tally) fit on a dry, bright. bracing day
than on a wet, dull, and decidedly se-
dative day.
On a -fine da' the vital pmeesses are
carried out briskly and effectually,
thus enabling the mind to operate
clearly, •quickly,' decisively, and opti-
mastically. On a wet day there is a
slowing down of -the vital funetions, a
retardation of the effective building
up of pew tissuc-s, so that the mind
operates rather mare slowly and less
decisively. „
A word to the wise is enough -Come
son thrives and becomes robust and
active; Without it he becomes pale,
unhealthy and dull of intellect. It
is said that one of the finest outdoor
exercises is being driven by a blood -
horse at the height of speed; and even
the thought of it conveys an idea of
exhilaration. But while the great
, Out-of-doors is always invitirag us, we
often turn, away ancl neglect, the pro-
• fessed fellowship. ,At night .many of
us seem to prefer hot, stuffy bedrooms
where little or no fresh air can cir-
culate, and consequently we are un-
able to replenish the supply of oxygen
in our -lungs. .
. In many matters of hygiene we are
far behind the lower terms of life, as
for instance the bee. What a lesson
in ventilation the busy little bees can
;teach us. Knowing that they require
fresh air if they are to keep up their
restless activity, the bees put them-
selves' to . great trouble to see that
they get it. Indeed, a beehive is a
most- wonderful lesson in scientific
ventilation: Here is a city packed
such as is unknown in the most crowd-
ed human city, and yet living through
the heat of summer and cold of
winter with a teinper,ature uniform
and equable and with .breathing, air
unvitiated. I -low is it done? The
methods might be worth the atten-
tion of sanitary experts, for bees ob-
tain their fresh air by what may be
called a rotary system. They .hate
the through draft, that is, a cold cur-
rent passing vertically through the
hive. Theirnnethod is to combine the
movement of fresh air with warmth,
alighting board will se that the ven-
tilating bees area always at one side
of the entrance, never the centre, and
the fresh air is passed in at one side
made to circulate round the walls and
then passed out again at the other side
of the entrance; and 'during excep-
tionally hot weather, another' company
of bees can be seen fanning out the
