The Chautauqua, which closed, its
four-day course in Exeter Thursday
last was n aucceiss aa to talent, at-
tendance and finance: The talent was
cxcentionally good—Carveth Wells'
account of :his six •yearn in the Malay
Peninsula. Miss Constance Boulton on
"Canada's Womanhood", 'Wm. H. Stout
on "Seeing Life Whole", and Rev, l)r.
Robert Norwood of "The Dominion
and ite 1Destiny" were lectures well
worth hearing and thoroughly enter-
taining; while the music by the
Shakespeare Quartette, the Wagns.rian
Quartette. .the Jordan Entertainers and
the Old Song Singers was enjoyable
and highly pleasiatgs The attendance
an each taccasioin was fair to good, and
much of 3t* . ,due (to the effects of
the Woman's Iatstituftea, who had the.
afar an hand, and at is a pleasure to
note that althou gh their financial re-
ward is ,not large, they, at least, sue-
ceeded in!more than meeting the guar-
antee and Paying expenses.
DEFENDED TROPHY
Two rinks from. the London Thistle
Bowling Club, skipped by Fred Allen
and Claude Bluett made an attempt
to lift the -Mintee Trophy on Thurs-
day evening last, but failed by three
shots. Bluett defeated Seldom, by 11
points, but Creech wan from Allen by
13 points. The Exeter rinks were—
Woods, Stewart, ,Taman; and Seldon;
Anderson, Ferguson, Heaman and
Creech
On Friday e,ves,,ing two rinks from
St. Matthews ,Club, Landon, played
challenge .games here for the. Mintee
Trophy. but they, too; were unsuccess-
ful. On this occasion Taman's rink
saved the day. He was up 31 allots
and Creech was dawn; 11 chats, The
players On the Exeter rinks were
Rivers, Woods, Stewart and Taman;
Chri. tie, Ferguson, Anderson and
Creech. --

blas this Wednesday. Heaman and
Creech Wan the Stewart Trophy in

In achallenge game,af bowls on Fri-
day afternoon the Molsons Bank de-
feated the Bank of Commerce 18 to 5.
