STEEPLE DESTROYED.
The steeple, of Jaahes Street Meth-
odist Church, ,Exeter, was destroyed
by fire on Friday .evening at 4 x
o'clock dm-yng, an electrical storm
which passed over this section. Th,e
lightning struck the; brick work ten
or twelve feet above the roof ,and
communicating with the woodwork
inside it ignited and burned until the -
steeple fell over. In failing the' stee-
ple caught on the high, tension hydra
wires but the'cu'rnent had been cut
off. For -a time there was danger
that the fire would commuhi,cate with
the roof, but the fine brigade, which
was early on the scene, did excel-
lent work dm,' confining the flames to
the tower' unid, steeple. The interior
of the church was damaged to some
extent by ;Ore. `waiter. Mrs.', M. Salter,
while pissing the church, narrowly es-
caped being struck,by-falling` 'brick
when. the ,lig!hitning "struck. Fireman
T. G. Creech, who was an the ladder
handling the hose:whieni the steeple
Cela, was none, too far away, but luck-
ily .it did not fall toward him. The
wires had to be cut to allow. the stee-
ple to fall, colnsequlently we. had no
light until next morning. The dam-
age to the church is cowered by in-
surance.
