Mr. Archie Hyslop, farmer of Brus-
sels was the unanimous choice of the
North Huron Liberal Association for
the House of Commons at the annual
meeting of that body held at Wing -
ham last week.
Mr. Paul Coates horse attached to
a light wagon, and left standing up
town on. Monday afternoon, became
frightened and made a rapid dash
down Main Street and east on Huron
but no damage ,vas done.
Mr and Mrs. Walter Pakenham of
Toronto announce the 'engagement of
their daughter, Electra Mary .Strang,
to Dr. William Edwin Dempster, of
Exeter the marriage to 'take . place

Rev. John Hart of Brucefield an-
nounces the.engagement of his young-
er daughter, Alice Alberta, to Herb-
ert L. Whiteman of Toronto, son of
Mr. and Mrs. John Whiteman, Kippen

Dr James Russell of Hamilton died
at his .home in that city on May 31st
in. his 73rd 'year, after six months'
illness. For 20 years he had been
medical superintendent of the Hos-
pital for Insane in that city. He was
a brother of Messrs David and Wm.
Russell of Exeter, and formerly, re-
sided in Usborne. Township. Mr. Dav-
id Russell arid son David attended
the funeral.
Rev E. G. Powell, who has been
joint field secretary for Huron and
Perth; in convection ;wroth tihe-enforce-
anent of the Canada Temperance Act
for the past three years ,has resigned,
and -is . to take up a larger work in
connection with the, committee of one
hundred, with headquarters at Lon-
don, and having mast of Western On-
tario 'as his. field. The two counties
wilt shortly choose •a successor.
RECOMMENDED -Mr. W. J Car-
ling, for over fifty years a resident of
Exeter, and the last 'two or three
`years of near Brighton, was On Sat-
urday'
last recommended as a fit and
proper person to be appointed post-
master 'at Exeter, 'to. succeed the late
Edward ' Christie. Ms. ,Carling will
return to 'Exeter and •take charge as
soon as the-appoiftrnerat is gazetted.
Mr Carling =is very - popular with the
.people of this .'community, and his
tenure of the office should be pop-
ular: and sucdessfril,
DR ROUI:,STON'S.. MOTHER IS
DEAD. -After an: illness of only a
few days, there passed away on 11' ay
30th at the residence, of her son, here,
Margaret• Edwards relict of the late
Robert Roulston, at the age of 65
years. During the last few years
deceased had frequently visited here
and, on this :'• castors had come only
a day ar 'two .before' becoming ill.
'Pneumonic was the ,cause of death.
Born in _`.lornurgton, ,.Perth Co., she
resided -there alt 'her life. Her hus-
band prededeasied her ten years. She
leaves a family ,of three sons, James
ire' the West, : John an the .homestead.
and' Dr G. F. of Exester.The m:e
mains were taken to her home on
Thursday and the funeral took place
to Milverton, • cemetery on, Saturday.

AGED LADY PASSES. - After
three years" tresidence with her ,laugh
ter here, the, death took place on Sun-
day even ing of Harriet Hammond,re-
lict of the late Thomas Hammond, at
the. age ,g of 83 years and 6 months,.
Deceased suffered a stroke some
months ago, and a fe.w weeks since
she fell out of bed and fractured 'her
hip so that the ,end came as a great
'relief to her suffee Mg. Born in Eng-
land she came to Canada with her
parents about eighty years ago and
settled near Staffa, ,where &lite lived
all . her life except about a year in
Buffalo' and three ',years here. Her
husband died several years ago. Three
sons and two daughters survive, W il-
liam in, -Buffalo,, James' and George
in Wash ingtod State, r' Mrs, Dole in.
Alberta and Mrs. William Rivers of
Exeter. The funeral took niece to
Staffa cemetery Tuesday afternoon.
