SYNOPSIS OF CANADIAN NORTH
WEST LAND REGULATIONS.
The sole head (A a family, or any
male over 18 years old, may home-
stead a quarter-sectioo of available
Dominion land in Manitoba, Saskatoli-
ewan or Alberto. Applicant must ap-
pear in person at the 1)ominion Lands
j Agency or Sub -Agency for the Dis-
trict. Entry by proxy may be made
at.any Dominion Lands Agency (but
not Subaao,ency), on certain condi-
tions.
Duties—Six months residence upon
and cultivation of the land in each of
three years. A homesteader may five
within nine miles of his homestead on
a farm ,ot ar least 80 acres, on cer-
tain conditions. A habitable house is
required except where residence is
performed in the vicinity.
Live stock may be substituted for
cultivation under ,certain condition.
In certain districts a homesteader in
ogeoa standing may pre-empt a quar-
tet -section alongside his homestead,

Duties—Six months residence in

stead patent ; also 50 acres extra cul-
tivation Pre-emption patent .rnay be
obtained as soon as homestead patent,
on certain conditions.
A settler who has exhausted his
homestead right may take a purchas-
ed homestead in certain districts.
Price $3.00 per acre. Duties—Must re-
side six months in each of the three
years, cultivate 50 acres and erect a
house worth $300.

the face of a world shortage of food must
be. a matter of concern to all. It points
out the path of duty to men and boys
unable to enlist in the army but capable of
helping to increase production.

one of the indispensable means of victory, the country
faces a serious shortage of men and boys on the farms, The
Department of Agriculture emphasizes the urgency of every
man and boy taking to heart this splendid opportunity for
patriotic service.
BDecideOYS ages of 14 and 18, and have good term record, you can
now to help in the war. If you are between the
secure promotion at school by enlisting for farm service
any time between April 20th and May 20th.
Parents are urged to encourage their boys to enlist for farm ,
service. The physical and moral welfare of your boy will be
advanced by a summer spent close to Nature; an interest will be
awakened in an important industry of the country that will be a
help to him in his whole future,
M„„ The Department appeals to retired farmers, to men
un. following no occupation (retired), to business men who
• can spare at least a portion of their, time, to all men who
can arrange their affairs so as to help some farmer. Every man is
invited to enlist for farm service.

of last week after a brief illness, in
the person of Mary Vanslyke, relict of
the late Stephen W. Haines, "in, her
89th 'year. Mrs. rRaines was born in
Oxford County, but came to Wood --
ham shortly after her marriage, and
resided heie ever since. Her nu -
band died faun -teen years ago. She

of 1Coiboirne.—Early Monday the spirit
of Mrs, Abraham Geiger passed away
Deceased bad been ill some months
and gradually became weaker. Besides
her sorrowing husband she leaves a
number of sons and daughters by a
former smarriage, to mourn her loss.
