The Exeter Advocate, 1916-5-18, Page 1The 161st Battalion is working hard to fill its ranks with the itoys of "Old Huron" County. Will you not Help? • TW'ENTY-EIGHTE YEAR Our Corner. The recteiting address of Captian Dacey in the Opera House Thurs- day leveeing was a masterly effort, a meet fervent and forceful a,ppeal for a. recruits, and yet, the result is ap- pareatty nil. What is the reason? Is IC the lack of loyalty and patriotism of the people? Is t the antagonistic .1% spirit that is raised by the speaker? Is a that this community is dead to the great need of the hour? Or is et that Apparently barmless, but eta- sotutely _nonsensical habit of windiug up a serious and compelling appeal, by a dismal. deadly vote a thanks? There was no oersoe more undesir- ous of a Vete Of thanks than was Captaill Dancey o whom the vote was tended, 11;: wanted to leave the maxida of his hearers in a serious tweed, and at was a wonderful ad- dress to accomplish that purpose, and thee much ot the good effect is Wiled by his becoming a little ring- foiicrean a eaeless vote of thanks. Why canteet the war auxil- iary thank their speakers afterwards if they dm it necessary. Theaux- !nary invites the speaker. It is up to the auxilary to extend thanks in a private way and avoid the nonsense. The votes of thanks have generally been well 'tendered but from a atudy of the attitude of the recipient we hays come to, the conclusion that the "VOte" is not Wanted, and is in fact, the last thheg desired at such a time. We eine be wrong, en our conclusion fiat something is wrong when you hear many people say on leasing a meeting of this sort, "Fine address- -Useless vote of thaxass", "Pity the aaeaker had to answer that vote of thank% it spoiled the address", etc., t.te.
