Ttttheay ne
meeting on Monday evening was .mot
large, but those present listened with
attention .to the addresses ay the
reeve, councillors and school Trustees.
Clem- Senior was voted to the. :hair
and called on the persons nominated.
Reeve Taylor discussed the work
of the past year in a general away,
both as to county and village matters.
Councillor Hind spoke particularly
of the financial matters, her being the
chairman of 'the finance committee.
Councillor Beavers confined himself
pretty well /to hydro Matters ,and
discussed it 'thoroughly.
Councillor Rbulston spoke of Reds,
Cross and patriotic work, and discus-
sed the advisability of extending the
town boundary southward.
The•wprk of the, councili•nas been
before the people all the year and has
been discussed fromtime to time, so
that the ratepayers are fairly ,.amiliar
with the business of the village, and
it does hot need an extended review
from us at this ,time; A notable fea-
ture is the fact that two 'years ago
there ,was a deficit of over $7000
and to -day by careful management and
a slight increase of taxes the deficit
amounts to t$753,28, with unpaid tax-
es of $753.89, or practically nil. In
two years a deficit of over $7000
has been wiped out. That 'feature
alone is 'sufficient warrant or se -el-
ecting the old council by ,acclamation.
We aro glad we proposed election by
acclamation and glad of its accomplish
mens If this council continues the
good work we will, have a lower rate
of taxation next year; even if we do
contribute liberally to the patriotic
funds.
Messrs . Gladman and Fuke, • who
with Mr,. Armstrong ,are re-elected to
the School. Board, discu ssed the work
done in- remodelling the school,

"THERE IS A WRONG IMPRES-
SION ABROAD.
Among some people there is an on -
pression that it is the duty of the
Government to furnish sends to in-
duce men to enlist and to aid recruit-
ing. •
Thi.: is not correct, enlistment is
voluntary on the part of the individual
and the Government's responsibility
begins when the man has enlisted.
From that moment the recruit is taken
care of by the Government, provided
with clothing, equipment, living al-
lowance and pay according to fank.
Alt over Canada, recruiting leagues
have been organized by citizens,'neet
tines ere being held, literature dis-
tributed ,in fact an energetic campaign
to sit recruiting. City, town and
county councils have made liberal
grant= to recruiting leagues for the
purpose of assisting them rinancially
in their patriotic work. The Govern -
