Andrew, for forty yearsa resident of Elimville, too! place en Gorrie on December 18, after ar illness of only a few .rays of acute indigestion. He is survived by his wife and five sons and twv daughters, who have the sympathy of their many friends in this locality. A very pleasant social gathering took place at the home of .Sir. end Mrs Frank Triebner, Stephen, ane ev- ening last week in honor of Private Hubert White, who recently return - from the front. The evening was pleasantly spent in instrumental and vocal music, games, etc, and Private White gave a short but interesting talo on trench life n the overseas battles. Three out of five prize winning cattle at Guelph and Toronto. Fairs were recently slaughtered in Hamilton and found to be tubercular. Lungs and kidneys were bath affected, '>ut otherwise the beasts were healthy. Five government inspectors, one of whom was Dr. Ramsay, formerly of Exeter, examined and condemned . the animals This indicates how easy it is for the ordinary butcher to be mistaken as to the food value of meat, and ,shows that no beast should be eaten until properly inspected. It is announced in a German mag- azine that among the peace conditions which will be insisted apon oy Ger- many will be the imposition ofaheavy indemnity an the British self-govern- ing Dominions; that in proportion to the assistance the Dominions nave giv- en 'the Empire will be the fine impos- ed upon them Canada probably would be lucky to escape with the paying of $1,000,000,000. The effect of the German's article will probably be to make Canada more than ever deter- mined to carxy on the struggle until the German military power is utterly destroyed DRAWING POSTPONEle—Owing to the meagre amount of tickets sold and fox other reasons the dreeeng for the little "porker," given by Mr. F. Begg. butcher, the proceeds of which iia to be devoted to patriotic 'purpos- es, was postponed Christmas _Lye, to be drawn one week late, New Year's Eve Mr. Begg has decided to dis- pose orf the pig that has been on ex- hibition in his window and will have another to take its place. Clem- Senior was voted to the. :hair and called on the persons nominated. Reeve Taylor discussed the work of the past year in a general away, both as to county and village matters. Councillor Hind spoke particularly of the financial matters, her being the chairman of 'the finance committee. Councillor Beavers confined himself pretty well /to hydro Matters ,and discussed it 'thoroughly. Councillor Rbulston spoke of Reds, Cross and patriotic work, and discus- sed the advisability of extending the town boundary southward. The•wprk of the, councili•nas been before the people all the year and has been discussed fromtime to time, so that the ratepayers are fairly ,.amiliar with the business of the village, and it does hot need an extended review from us at this ,time; A notable fea- ture is the fact that two 'years ago there ,was a deficit of over $7000 and to -day by careful management and a slight increase of taxes the deficit amounts to t$753,28, with unpaid tax- es of $753.89, or practically nil. In two years a deficit of over $7000 has been wiped out. That 'feature alone is 'sufficient warrant or se -el- ecting the old council by ,acclamation. We aro glad we proposed election by acclamation and glad of its accomplish mens If this council continues the good work we will, have a lower rate of taxation next year; even if we do contribute liberally to the patriotic funds.
