What a pity. —x—o—x— The life- of a citizen of the United States is worth just so much a head, and the government is ashamed to state the price. History will say that when the great .war for the liberty of mankind was fought Canada sent two or three hundred thousand men, and the Unit- ed States sent Ford and a lot of protests x—o--x-- It Reeve John Leckie of Brussels was the cause, and in looks it, of the refusal of the County Council to ;rant $1000. or 31500 to assist in re- cruiting the Huron Battalion, ,hen it is about time they were having an electior3 in Brussels and a real man was elected to take the reeveship. The British parliament has ex- tended the life of the Imperial parlia meat from five to six years. The Canadian parliament has been called to avec: o:: January 12th and a situ- !lar Move will be made to avoid an election. The government will pro- pose it and it remains for the ipnos- itio'r -to approve or disapprove—toe - old a war -time election or to have a war -time election. If the ,apposit ion wants an election the people will soon decide that the extension be for five years instead of one. —s—o—x-- Wit). nil due respect to the work of The magistrates in this district, and we believe there are no better in Western Ontario still is it not rime Exeter had a police magistrate for the town and surrounding municipali- tie- of South Huron. Not that lie will know any more, but a police magistrate is 'given wider powers than the ordinary justice of the peace, and 'there is surely no, sensible reason why the south part of this county may not have a police magistrate, as well as the north at Winghatn, the west at Godericb, the east at Sea - forth, or the centre at Clinton. Let us make a move at once to have one appointed. MUNICIPAL ELECTION TALK ,Y—o_x— Thc 'first rumors of an election far municipal honors were heard on the street during the week, when it was stated that Councillor B. W., F. Bea- vers would oppose Reeve J. W. ray-- lor for the chief chair. Mr. 3eavers hae not confirmedthe report, nor hee Reeve Taylor stated that he will rue again Na new aspirants for the council board have been mentioned in our hearing. Glad - man. and we presume the usual el- ection by acclamation will take place for trustees —x—o—x— The sensible thing during these times of heavy taxes for war pur- poses would be to have elections by acclamation. It strikes one this year that there is little to eriticrze the present council for, It might be Wel that the roads have- not received much attention, hut this is a matter that needs a permanent policy, which has not been evolved yet in this town and until one has been cle- cidea upon the roads may just as well be simply repaired as occasion requires. The coup; cil has ;leen practising economy and it did not hurt much. There is really no occasion for an election.
