Clandeboye, Aug. 13 --The Clande-
boye Women's Institute held a social
at the home of Mr. those Simpson at
Mooresville and a considerable sum of
money was taken in. Musical num-

CLOUD BURST OVER OSHAWA
Oshawa... August 15,-A cloud burst
caused by the meeting of two storms
between. 3 and' 4 o'clock this after-
noon some f' miles from here
caused a flood, Which swept the
Main street and carrying away a large
quantity' of goods from the Oshawa
Canning: -Factory. Much damage was
done in the vicinity, cattle 'being
drowned, grain Iields and orchards
swept bare arid seven cement bridges
erected at a cost of $20,000,being
carried away. It is feared that ;he
outlying.. districts near 'Columbus and
Brooklyn,..where the storm originated
have suffered -even more severely. In
the town the flood was ea deep that

Dugald. McColl, sheriff of Elgin
County, and former M.P.P., died at
St, Thomas yesterday morning, after
a lingering illness, aged 69 years.
The Armenian Bishop at •Petrograd
has received information that 60,000
Armenian refugees have arrived at
Igdir, the principal outlet of the Vila-
yet of Van.
An official communication issued at
Berlin yesterday tells of an allied air
raid Monday over Zweibruecken and
Sanktingbert,.-Bavaria. Eight per-
sons were killed and two wounded in
the latter town.
Five men are in the Monteral Gen-
eral Hossp:tai suffering from severe
cuts t' _ bruises as a result of an ex-
plosion at the factory of the Canadian
Explosives Co, at Beloeil, shortly
after noon yesterday.
Premier Norris arrived. in Winni-
peg yesterday, for the first time since
Friday's elections, and was given an

the most prominent farmers in Kent

It is officially announced that the
Austrian submarine U-12 has been
torpedoed and su.ik with all hands in
the upper Adriatic Sea by -an Italian
submarine,
Lord Selborne, replying to a de-
putation of the Canadian Cattle As-
sociation, said he could not accede
to the request to remove the em-
bargo on Canadian cattle.

Daily News says British submarines
have entered the Black Sea and tor-
pedoed the Turkish cruiser which
formerly was the Breslau, one trans-
port, and one gunboat,
The will of the late E. C. Walker,
of Walkerville, filed for probate in
Essex County Surrogate Court, dis-

LONDON, Aug. 16.—Miners, meet-
ing at various places in the South,
Wales coal fields yesterday, adopted
resolutions expressing dissatisfaction`
with the delay in completing a new
wage agreement, and recommending
that unless a settlement is reached
soon another conference be held to
consider the renewal of the strike.

LONDON, Ont., Aug. 16.—Private
Samuel Brown, of the 33rd Battalion,
C.E;F., in training here, says he has
the names of six London landlords
who refused to rent a house to his
wife and two children, solely 35ecause
Brown wasa soldier, and despite the
fact; that rent was offered in advance
in each case.

LONDON, Aug. 17.—A message
which has just arrived from Living-
;atone Post Says that Saisi, on the
northern border of Rhodesia, was at-
tacked on Judy 26 by 2,000 Germans
