Chickens seem to be well anti hearty arid scratching around then in a few moments fall dead, or seem to lose the use of their limbs, at least, before expiring. One man has lost eighteen fine birds, another seven and another nine. They cannot lath - en this strange malady. All the chickens thus dying have reached the size whets they would dress at about one and a half pounds. Pastor Carpenter, who is undoubt- edly a follower or colleague of Pas- tor Russell appeared here on Sun- day afternoon and gave a talk on "Where are the dead'', in the Opera House -to a fairly large attendance. On the whole the discourse was not unusual in any way, but was simply a fairly good sermon. With refer- ence to, his subject in particular, he quoted scripture to uphold his argu- ment that when man died he simply goes asleep and knows nothing until the resurrection and judgment day. That is practically the .only point in whicb otbers might differ With 'aim, and we cannot 'see that it matters a great deal whether the judgment day i: immediately after death ar a mil- lion years later. The main point is as described in the well-known toast, "If you are alright here you'11ebe:al- right . there." Isen't that what all the pastor's teach? --o-- DIED IN DETROIT.—The death occurred in Detroit, Mich., on July 8, of a former well - known resident of Exeter in the person of • Isabelle Gould, relict of the late John Gould, at the age of 76 yearsand '6 months.
