JUNE 24, 1915 SANDERS. 3 CREiECH The War Summary Ir, the war situation during the past Neel; conditions have not greatly clia`riged. The Allies on the west have repulsed all attacks by the Germans and have made considerable gains in places. In this field the Canadianshave again been in :tetion and their losses have been heavy, particularly ,to Western Ontario men. The Germans en the east front are stilt pushing back the Russians, but have failed to break the line, al- though it is badly bent. This is the Russian policy, however, in the face of greater numbers and much more ammunition. They will come hack es snor as the pressure is relieved, and will keep the Germans engaged. The Germar. and Austrian losses on this front are very heavy,, and it is diff- icul: to see just what they Nope to gain as the position is becoming more OddfoIIows Decoration Day Exeter Lodge, No. 67, I, 0.0.1a. will hold their anneal Decoration an cf the graves of their departed brethren on Sunday, June 27th. FURNISHER 'dangerous the farther they advance. [tab is still making progress, while in the Dardanelles the Allies are go- ing ahead _although slower than one w u c lc wish. On the sea the :abs, get a small boat occasionally and I at times a submarine is stunk, The , great carrying trade of Britain goes on pretty much as usual. An at- tempt was made to blow up the Wind so- armory but it failed, although a clothing company's building in Walk erville was damaged by dynamite. Germar sympathizers are thought to have done tike deed. Once in a while somebody gets the ides that the reason the local paper dee:: not report every scandal that come: to public knowledge is be- cause the publisher is afraid. That's not the reason. The reputable -news- paper especially in a small town where everyone is a neighbor to >v- erycne else. takes no delight 'n giv, ine publicity,to those things that nave brought disgrace to some family. it is much more pleasant to record the good things that may happen, to :ell abou the incidents than tend to nake life more endurable, and that :uplift rte ah than tear down, that!nine, b. instead ad of sorrow, rrotw, pride .nstead of heartache. So if you don't always find 'in the Advocate the delectable bit of gossip that would doubtless • make "good reading and if you are inclined to blame the editor ae- ceust he "doesn't print all the.news consider that some home has had enough worry over unfortunate hap- penings, and that the gossips . end , scandal n aI of mongersthe g community gladly and ghoulishly give sufficient publicity ,to. the details to satisfy the lots est tastes. Incidently it might be remarked here that the most •.ore - plaint of censored news comes from people who have now or have had in their lives some things they are very glee were not given newspaper sub- licit' There come times, of course whet. it is the definite business of the local newspaper to speak right gut in meeting, to tell what :happened, to give open publicity to conditions that ar. a reproach to a community and fo• which the light of publicity seems the only ,cure, Tolerance is not a lack of courage , Flare timCs is talked over the war but as far as Ontario is concerned theie is very little foundation for such a. plea. One proof is the fact that up to June 1st 1915, the Ont- ario government issued 31,000 'notor licenses, as many as the whole of 1914. People appear to have money for any- thing they really make up their minds to spend it on and excuse of finan- cial shrinkage appears to be moreean excttst- than a valid reason when it is off exed, The Patriotic funds under variant names, have been generously supported but there is no reason for letting up as the call is, yet very in- sistent. Ir, this issue will be found the Lbs' publication of the Hydro Elect - re. By-law, which we commend to your careful perusal and earnest con- templation. Hydro has come to stay and Exeter knows that we must fall in line or drop out of the running. The by-law is pretty ,plain, and we fee! that is safe in thehands of the 'electors. If anyone desires any light thrown on the subject The Advocate wily endeavor to have these dark places brightened utp in subsequent issues. WESTERN FAIR, LONDON The Western Fair of London, Ont, as an agricultural exhibition occupies a prominent position in Western On- tario and throughout the whole Do- minion. This will be the 48th An- nual Exhibition without a break, and every dollar of prize money won. during that time has been paid. The management has been increasing the pizc list from. year to year and this year through the assistance of the Dce inion •. Goerernment they are . en- abled to add over : $3,000 to what was already a liberal list.
