DEATH.—The death took place at
her home Con. 2, flay, on Dec. 50th
of Bessie Ball, wife of Robert Row-
eltffc' at the age. of 48 years, 3 months
and IS days. Deceased had 'leen' an
invalid for 20 years, caused by an
injure lathe spine, and the end must
!nee come as a great release to !ter.
Only the: husband survives. The fun-
eral took place to the. Exeter .:erne

DEATH OF CHESTER PROUTY
—There passed away on December 31
at the home of his son, Samuel C.
.Prouty Lot 21, Con. 3, Usborne, as-
ter a e illness o•f several years, frorr
old age, one of the old settlers, in
the person of Chester Prouty, aged
89 years seven months, and. 27
days. The family of the late Mr.
Prouty ,came to, Canada from the state
of Vermont. and can trace their an-
cestry back for three hundred years
having a printed retard of it. He
was. the youngest of a family, of five
bays and one girl, he' being the only.
one born in Canada—at Cornwall. His
father Hiram Prouty, was a carpenter
ani i helped to build some; of the
public: buildings in Ottawa. While
attending school in Cornwall the late
Mr. Prouty was a schoolmate of. John
Sandfield Macdonald. At 17 r years of
age he commencedto teach school,
startin„' an his birthday,. in Osnabrook
after which he took a course in
Franklir Academy, N.Y., and theri
taught in. Papineau Scenery, and L'Or-
,i•geat until 1854, when he moved to
Western, Ontario, teaching at Grundy
Corners, near Clandeboye, then called
Flanagan's Corners, and• 16 years at
Fairfield --until 1871, when he gave
up 'teaching having taught 28 years in
all. He was clerk of Stephene Town-
ship for 41 years, giving, up in 1899,
awing to failing eyesight. -In 1849 he
marriect; Jamima Anderson, daughter
of the late Francis Anderson, rho
predeceased him 32 years He is
survived% by one son Samuel. ,C., six
grrazed `clulldren and five great " ;rand
children. Deceased was highly re-
spected throughout his long life. The
tumoral; took place to Exeter cemetery
cn . Saturday afternoon.
