from civilization than the scene of
Grenfell's work in Labrador.
"The most anxious .moment'of the
year," said Mr. Stewart, "is when.
the Hudson Bay Company's vessel
from England is sighted; and we
are waiting to know whether she
brings us good news or ill. A few
years ago my furlough. was nearly
due, and I was looking forward to
getting back to see my old father in
Ireland. Then the ship came, and
I found he had died nine months
before.':
"We get on quite well without
news," the exile declared, "and. I
find I can pick up the threads of
everything that matters within a
week after I get home."
For the last eighteen months Mr.
Stawart has had a. colleague to
share his solitude, but for twelve
years before that he carried on the
work single-handed.
The missionary's preaching in-
cludes the gospel of cleanliness, and
he backs it up in a practical way
with cakes of soap.
"Unfortunately," -he remarked,
"I gave them scented soap to start.
with, and they ate every cake they
eauld get hold of. Now ' I have
taken to carbolic, and they say they
don't like 'medicine soap,'' so they
use it for the purpose it was meant

'ANOTHER KNIGHT MOTOR.
SUCCESS."
The adoption of the:Knight Motor
by the F. B. Stearns Company of
Cleveland seems to have been
merely the beginning of the taking
up . of this motor by several promi-
eent; firms throughout the United
States.
The achievement of the Kn6:ght
Motor, both in this country and
abroad, have induced the Moline
Automobile Company of Moline,
Ill.,. to' adopt it. This oompany will
have cars equipped with the power-
ful Knight Motor on the market by
the first -of the year.
Scarcely second in importiance to
their announcement in regard to
the Knight Motor, is the 'recent
purchase of a, Iicense . by J. M.
Wil't's of the Willys Overland Com-
pany. The Overland people are, by
the way,' one of the largest poppet
engine builders' of the United
States. In the old Garford• plant at
Elyria, Ohio, which was formerly
employed in the construction of
Garford Trucks, they have, started
to build the Knight Motor. This is
most'rignificant, for possibly no one
motor oar company has been more
strikingly successful than that
directed by Mr. Willys.
The Best Books.

fourth -rate books when you have
mastered all the first-rate. Read
above you. We should choose. our
books as we do our lovers -not so
far above us as to be beyond our
reach, but far enough to inspire
and elevate us. Why should, we
read the poetasters and neglect the
poets? Why fill our time with the
shallow compilers, and let go the
great chronicler's of great events?
Why be, compelled to remain in ig-
norance of the immortal classics,
because we have wasted our pre-

teller of the day ? We need to
know what. De Quincey finely -calls

the London Times,mpaying tribute
to the inventive powers" of that
great scientist for the good that
has resulted from their application

machine devised by Sir William
Thomson (as he then was) is the
subject of Admiral Kennedy's par-

readily be understood when the'
narrow escapes from destruction
for which the machine was respon-
