Removing a Splinter.
A splinter in the hand is not only
uncles -del -table, but also dangerous,
as it may cause blood -poisoning.
You sho"iild, therefore, always re-
move a splinter directly you feel it.
If you have no surgical in'stniment
at hand, excellent tweezers can he
made from an ordinary wooden
match. Split the match a little
way down the centre, and to ex-
tract the Splinter use it just as you
would a pair of tweezers.

Party of Men Had .a Terrible
Experience.
quiVerding, riverwhere there, . is
cksand is ,something like rushing
horses out of -a burning stable. In
"The last of the Plainsmen" Zane
Grey describes he* a party of men
and horses passed through the trea-
cherous Little Colorado River. It
was a wide, ,shallow stream of swift-
ly running, reddish-extuddy water.
Through the channel, cut by floods,
little streanmiets trickled and mean-
dered in all directions..
The sand seemed firm, but teeter
oozed out rotund my feet;' and when
I stepped out, the whole bar shook
like jelly. I pushed my foot through
the crust, and the cold, wet sand
took hold, and tried to suck me
down.
'"Ho•w an yotl ford this stream
with horses V' I asked Emmett.
"We must take our chances," re-
plied he. "We'll bitch two teams
to ono wagon, anti run the horses.
I've forded here at worse surges
than this. Once a teams got stuck
and I had too leave it; another time
the water was high, and washed me
clown -stream,''
Emmett sent his son into the
stream on a mule, The rider lashed
his mount, and plunging, splashing
along, got through Tit a pace very
near a gallop; rIo returned in the

bad place near the other side. '
Jones Slid 1 got on the first wa-
gon and trued to ,coax up the four
horses,' .buit they would trot start,
Minima bad to lash: them to start
therm, The other 'Mormons riding
alongside yelped .at thelia, and used
'their whips. The wagon bowled
iiltoo the w.iitel' with a tu•eznenelolls
splash. We were wet through be -
fora we had gone twenty feet, The
plunging horses were lost in yel-
low spray; the streaxn rushed gurg-
ling through the wheels; the Mor,•
mons yelled, 1 wanted to see, but
everything was hidden by a veil; of
yellow mist.Jones yelled in .;?y
ear, but I could not hear what he
said. Once the wagen-wheels
truck a stone or log, and we al
meet lurched overboard, A muddy
splash blinded zee, I .cried out in
my eaoiternent, and punched ;tones
in the back. The next •moment the
keen exhilaration of the experience
gave way to horror. We seemed to
drag axid almost .deep.
.
Some one roared, "Horsedorn !"
There: was en instant of painful
suspense, in which the imagination
pictured another tragedy added to
the story of this deceitful river -a
moment filled with intense feeling.
Then there came a sound of -furious
splashing and yelling; •and so 'th:c
three horses dragged their com-
rade out of the quicksand. Once
out, he regained his feet, and
plunged on. Spurred by fear, all
four horses increased their efforts,'
and amid clouds of spray galloped
the remaining distance to the other
side.
• "We made that fine and easy,"
remarked Emmett.
As Luck Would Have It.
`°Sure, it's Mike, the boy, that's
the lucky man.

"Why, murn, he got insured for
$5,000 and the very next day he
fell off the ladder, parotin', and
broke his neck."
