That there are still difficulties in
spite of these twinkling ' aids to
navigation seems. to be the .Lesson of
the ships White Squall, Toe Surge

,sailor does not fear lx .call his

Literary Efforts Few.
The paucity of literary ships
seems to hint that the sailor is not
a great reader. ' The e hipping list
does not resemble a college curri-
culum or abookseller's advertise-
ment. Of novelists we find Hugo,
whose "Toilers of the Deep" no
doubt recommended' hinn' Sir Wal-
ter Scott is remembered by a name-
sake ship, and a soore of Ladiee of
the Lake. There` is no evidence of
a nautical interest in popular fit -
tion. There is notching' later than
1Unole Torn, Topsy and Bien llur.
The sailor whose favorite muses are
those of history and heroic poetry
naturally. disdains the best sellers.
The poetry the sailor reads is like-
wise old-fashioned. Shakespeare,
strange to relate, has no ship to
himself, but Ophelia and Romeo are
remembered. The, ships Zuleika
and Mazeppa recall Byron, and
Minnehaha suggests Longfellow.
No doubt ,15 -inch guns and armored
turrets will ' deisand names of
greater explosiveness and velocity,
something perhaps from Kipling or
Robert Service.
A Poor Speller.
In spite, however, of 'these evi-
deuces of erudition we base .to tax
the sailor with aeneglee-tad educe -
tion. ,T'hefault may be due to bi-
lingualism, but at any rate ship
• names abound in mis-spellings.
Goliah does ditty for Goliath. Lia
for Leah, and Lidie for the dimin-
utive of Lydia. But . the . worst is
the "Germainnia," a ship owned
by ,aaF renchsnan on. the Lower St.
Lawrence, who learned his Iaegliah,
as many -other. French-Canadians

Music in Evidence.
The lack of a Terpsielaore is misoJhio f for idle hands is revealed
atoned for by many musical ships, in ships which we cannot. possibly
such as Andante, Cresoenclo and tae. goadsuh as Gambler, Moni-
Eri King.' On the whole the sailors eo, Nap And, L.eucky Jinx. '1`hat there

His feminine names, are not, how-
ever, ,taken from the ballet, but
from, the els:em otic sphere. Fully
forty per 'cent.' of Canadian ship
titles are fominine.Christian navies.
The Canadian sailor certainly loves
a la,,s, and above all alass named
Mary or Marie or .. some kindred
form. There float upon our waves
more than two hundred is'ea'nymphs
of the family of Mary. In fact the
Marys have it as easily as the Johns
among 'the male names. There are
over sixty Johns, including : John
13t ll and John L., bet not Jelin D.,
and among the Jacks there is, of
course, Jack'Ca,nuok.
Staggering Tina gine tioa.
But the masculinenames are
nothing ..00rpared with. the,-- femi-
nine. In fact the sailor's devotion
to feminine names ;almost' staggers
the imagination. There are over
one hundred varieties which range
mxiet%aphorioally from Dam to Beer-
sheba, literally from Ann to Toe.
There are aristocratic ones such as
Euphemia and Millicete and all the,
horns favorites such as Lizzie and
Libbie-:;and Addie, .a.mcl Carrie but
never a:CarrieNation, Among the
Jennies there is a Jeanne 4'Are,
and among the Annies an A.nni-s
Laurie. Some famous' names'' are,
however, neglected, There is no

Mabels; no Ida M. Tarbell'amongst

Matrimony Excepted..
There are plenty- of endearing
terms such as Gazelle, and, prom-
ises of fidelity: such as True Love,
butt very little hint of matrimony,
except in the Village Bride. And
there is no reference to babies
nearer than Winslow, • the famous
soothing syrup. The evidence of
the shipping list seems to confirm
the sailor's reputation as a winking.

Happy Family.
On the whole the names ' le has

the sailor's lot is as happy its his
tastes and eharactor are varied and
versatile. He looks on the bright
side of things. He earls no vessel

the sailor's main desire is for hap-
piness and virtue. There should be
no ',cliffeelty in persuading Cana-
dian youths to serve on ships like
these. Tt may be that the problem
of nav'al recruiting will be best
solved by the judicious selection of
attractive ship names.
One on Mr. Foy.
The Attorney -General for Orates-
io, the Hon. J. J. Foy, is fond of si
good joke, and his enjoyment is not
lessened by the fact that the joke
is on himself. Quite recently he
was hurrying to the Niagara Navi-
gation wharf in Toronto, carrying
his lawyer's bag, which was well
filled -with documents. A newsboy
proffered his wares, but Mr. Foy
shook hie head, however, on second
thought said, "If you want to earn
a nickel you can carry this bag to

Devoted to Saints.

an enthusiastic devotion to saints,
