Lumbago issudden in its attac'irs
and is so intensely painful that the:
sufferer is often unable to move,
even to turn in bed or rise from a

among working alien, mnorig whom
it numbene thousands ,of victims.
Asthe attacks come one quite fre-
quently and are so torturing, this
disease xneaus much loss of:' time
and money as well a$ the endur-
ance of much suffering: No victim
needs to. be told that liniments,
plasters and outward treatment
will not cure the disease. This
kind of treatment is merely a waste
of time and money. The trouble is
really a species of muscular .rhea-
natism, axid is due to :poor blood,

blood. It is for this reason that
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are so

We arose early . one February
morning, says a writer in the Chris-

„lean hotel in Neapolis for four
hours of travel over the modern
road near the Via Egnatia, which
should take us to ancient Philippi,
Dur vehicle was a somewhat dilap-

conveyance for this part of the

roughly paved streets, we came to
the centre of the old Neapolis,
passed near the great Roman aque-
duct and ascended another steep
street on the other side of themar-
ket plaice.
Early as it was we .found that the
people of Kavalla were up and do-
ing. The stalls of the fruit men
wore attractive with oranges,
pomegranates, lemons and dates.
The vegetable d'ealens displayed a
tempting array of cauliflower, cab-
bages, onions, okra, leeks and pota-
toes. As in all Eastern cities,
there wean() privacy. The cook was
preparing his breakfast on the side-
walk; the shoemaker was plying his.
awl, the tailor his needle, and the
blacksmith was shoeing his horses,.

Lots Drawn for Verdict.
A new method of administering
justice was invented and applied
recently at Villa Franca de Xira in
Portugal. A prisoner was charged
with coining, and as the jury was
evenly divided and could not agree,
they determined to draw lots. Two
pieces of paper were procured, .one
was inscribed "guilty" and the
otl}er "innocent." They were then
folded and ,shuffled, and one was
chosen by a juryman. It happened
to be the one inscribed "guilty,"
