Ile Rises 'Early, Faring, Plainly, and Living Entirely for the Sport. If Izaak- Welton could be re -in- carnated it is quite certain that King George would have no greater admirer or more loyal subject thaa the geeia.1 "Father of Angling, who has never had a more enthusi- astie eliseiple than His Majesty. of England. Xing Edward was an expert wiel- der of the rod, arid caught many a fine ealmon in the waters of the Dee and the Tweed; but, as old Donald esed to say His Majesty was "not awfu" enthusiastic," a description which, we may be sure, Donald Stewart, King George's de - Nested cerapeeion and herieleame en may a fie1d/1g expedition, would never apply to the present occu- pant of the throne a England. "MY HAPPIEST HOLIDAYS." "T love a gun,"° Kin.' George fessed recently, "hut1 !mite so happy as whet I an be mg the pools of the Dee, with t e long day before me." And it while fishing these pools in the Royal preserves o Abergeldie aid :Balmoral, iemote from Courts and the crowds. of Mall, that His Maesty has spent someQ1 tho most de- lightful da-ys of his life. Every spring Sr melee' years past the King has spent several weeks Abergeldie, indulging to the full Ms favorite pastime, Usually with only one companion, Sir Charles Oust, be makes his head- quarters at a small, two -storeyed house, Abergeldie Mains, a, few yards distant from the ancient castle. Rem he leads themp.le, primitive life, rising early,. faring plainly, and living entirety for his sport. Be usually starts at about teri o'clock: in the looming, with bin companion and aocinaple of attend- ants—Donald• Stewaq, His Ma. jesty's head gamekeeper, and Ar. thur Grant, thegillie, have mostly beehis companions of the humbler sort --and he devotes the whole day to the rod, smoking imid cigarettes almost incessantly. About T10011 a carriage brings WHY ARE BAD ROADS. The Apportionment of the Cost Is Where the Trouble Lim Why are bad roads? Some folks will tell you that roads are just na- wally bad, that any road that is not properly taken eare of will soon become bad, and that any road is bad unless it has been made good, Which is about as much as to say that the normal condition of a road is to be bad. To be sure a road that is not properly looked after, or eot pro- perly eranstrneted in the first place is bound to soon beeome a bad read. But Since man is ingenious enough to build roads at all for his own eenvenience, why does not man build reeds that, are suitable for his purposes'? There ie no question at all that a good road, well taken care of, is fee more economical and serviceable than bad one. Why should we expeet, the public highways to be in bad conditions any mere than we expect the pri- vate driveways on an ordinary well kept farm to bein bad condition The difficulty in keeping publie highways in condition is of course the apportionment a the eost. Too often the people who will be called upon to pay the larger share of the COSt, of a good road in the countrY, know very well that they will not receive benefit from it in proportion to the eost. And too ortein too, those who really stand to proa most by the construction of a road grudge the expenditure of a few dollars extra in taxes. At the Ninth Anneal Meeting of the Onterio Good Boads Associa- ion, held in Toronto, last March, SOITIO ilatqrestilig iiglif•e$ regarding the value and effects of good roads were given. Mr. M. Young, J, P., County Clerk Prince Bdward County, stated that the, value of f ra land in Kent County had been iuc*eased by means of geed roads $1,000 on every 100 acres. Mr, S, G. Lowery, of Niagara Township, tacit; that in his township in one ease eighty ares ot land haIha- ediately increased in value to the t of $1,000 as, the result of a ;Action of a good road, and 1eveU that if five relies of <I,n ost ol 8400 would im- prove 80 acres to this extent, it would improve the land en five miles of road to the extent of $35,000-4 strong argument in favor of good roads, • While all the speakers at the Con- vention dwelt on the importance of 111/19/1eOn tO the pools where, jii4 good roads in reducing the cost of Majei sty s working, and after A transporting goods to market, and smoke and rest on the bank fishing in imP"ving ondiliens of life ell is resumed as ong as the light the farm, not ono of them intimated lasts, when the return for dinner, that the eelling value of any farm is made. It was at these waters of Abergeldie that the King first learnt the gentle art of wielding a rod, near- ly forty years ago, with his father and John Brown as mentors, and he still recalls his delight in landing his first fish one spring day in the early and 13rown's enthu- siastic "Guidi Ye'll mak a, braw fecsher some day, Prince Geordie," HIS MAJESTY'S TACKLE, The Kirips, we are told. uses an le foot split -cane, steel -centered rod, in preference to the green heart, beloved of Dee fishermen, and most of his fish have been tak- en with the lly. As a caster he has few equals, and he is an expert in every fo.e.en of tackle. Not long ago, it is said, so keen was he on testing a new form of tackle which had been sent to St. James's Palace for his inspection that he actually left a levee which was in progress in order to gratify hie curiosity. The weather has no terrors for His majesty, and during one ter- rible week of blizzards, frosts, and howling gales he was out all day nt Abergeldie, and counted himself amply rewarded when, at the end of the week, he creeled a beauty of e pounds with the very last cast of the day. HOLIDAYS. Willie—"All the stores closed on the day my uncle died." Tommy—"That's nothing, All the banks closed for three weeks the day after my pa left town." You are wrong, Cordelia. A man, isn't necessarily on the water wa- gon because he peddles milk. Some people learn to do by be- ing done. Obviously the Wise way to ap- portion the cost of roads would be to tax the land benofitted in pro- portion to the benefit reeeived, which is indicated by the value of the land. Under the present system the con- struction a a good road means in- creased taxes on buildings and im- provements, increasing by that a- mount the cost of buildings and improvements, and restricting their production, and also increased prices for land. Then when roads ar4 constructed people wonder at the increased cost of living. On the other hand, plating the tax on laud value etc' leaving the buildings free, would tend to stimulate im- provements throughout the district affected and would to a certain ex- tent cheek the tendency to -very rapid increase of land values, or at least of the prices at which land was held. .MUSICAL SURPRISES. Though it may seen peculiar to thousands who are unfamiliar with Southern Nigeria, it is a fact that hero oysters actually pow on trees. All through the Niger Delta, where the creeks are tidal, there is a rise and fall of from six to seven feet of water. The suckers of the Man- grove trees which line the banks are covered with oyster a from the points between high and low water, and although they are partaken of sparingly by the Europeans dwell- ing in the parts, they form on of the staple articles of native diet.
