A CLOSE CALL.—What might have, rc- sulted ,la a serious conflagration hap- pened In the rear of12Mr. Thorn. Baker's Machine Shop on Wednesday night of last week. On Thursday morning on en- tering the `building it was' discovered to be full of smoke. On investigation at the back of the building ;where the store stood it was fgaund that the floor had caught fire, and a large hole, "several feet in diameter around the stove had been burned through, together with the joist, and the stove had partly toppled over. The fire was -still burning, and doubtless had it not been disctavcred when it was the result.woulc;a have been serious. It appears the day previous old rubbish. antd loose paper had been burn- ed in the stove and- it, is thought that the fire in some way communicated with the floor. Mr .Hunter, when burning the rubbish had taken; the precaution;•to put a quantity of ,,snow around the stove, and as a result the floor had become pretty well moistened, which no doubt checked ;the fire :from making :more ra- pid progress. Had the fire got, aazy kind of a start tthere is no telling where it would have ea clod, as the night was, ac- companied by a heavy wind. 3 UNIQUE , ENTERT.%I.NMEN'P.-The National Tea, and Entertainment given Caven:,Presbplerian church on "Friday evening in honor of Saint Patrick, was largely attended and thoroughly en- joyed by all present.
