The train was going at a very high speed, and when turning a sharp curve the engine jumped the track and, crashed into a freight. The Canadians killed were Walter Barwick of Toronto, law partner of Hon. A. B. Aylesworth; Rev. E.L. King, Toronto; 0. A. Pipon, Toronto. Lucan Wilson Ryan of London Tp, another Lucan High School pupil has accepted a position with the Bank of Hamilton at Wingham.-E. 0. Clement of Ber- lin has been appointed teller in the Merchant's Bank here. W. A. Shields has been transferred to Olds, Alta. F. J. Fox has passed his primary ex- amination, and B. A. Blackwell of Clandeboye his intermediate examina- tion at the Oollege of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario at Toronto. Ac- cept our congratulations boys. -The Irish Nine returned Sunday from Dres- den where they defeated the D.B.U. team of Detroit by 10 to 2. The Wa- bash team of St. Thomas and the Irish Nine played two games here Monday. The visitors won the morning game, 4 to 3 and lost in the afternoon by 10 to 4. -The picnic held in Mr. Ryder's grove on Tuesday week was most suc- cessful, the proceeds amounting to nearly $600. Miss Annie Fogarty of this place won the gold watch while Misses. Some few weeks ago be was sti.ieken nc iii with an illness and still that Ix d c rl skill and kindadministration of friends could do proved of no avail and on the above day he closed his eyes in death. He spent the greater part of his life here and among his friends, whom he numbered as many, he was. considered a true and staunch friend. The remains were brought to. Parkhill on Wednesday and conveyed to the home of his brother, Dougal, On the following day the funeral took place to the Mt. Carmel cemetery, He is survived by a sorrowing wife and . one child, besides a number of relatives, and to thein the sympathy of the coin - inanity is extended. Kirkton The Kirkton Methodist Sunday School Anniversary was held on Sun- day and Monday last, On Sunday the Rev. H. Graham of St. Marys preached two eloquent discourse:, which were listened to by large congregations. On Monday a strawberry festival was held in Mr. A. Kirk's grove which was very largely attended and all present enjoyed themselves. The Kirkton Band was present and enlivened the proceedings with choice music. The baseball matches between London Tig- ers and Orediton Stars were interesting features of the day's program. The former game resulted in a victory for LrelitOn by a score of 10 to 8. while the latter in favor of Kirkton by a score of 15 to 7. Anderson Miss Sara Anderson is the guest of her sister, Mrs. E. Church of Toronto. -Mr. Will, Brown of Comet is home for vacation. -Miss Laura Hewitt and Miss Maggie Anderson spent Friday the guest of their friend, Miss Gertie Miller of Winchelsea. -Mr. Austin Hewitt, tonsorial artist of Exeter, spent Sunday and Monday under the parental roof. -Miss Lottie Brown, school teacher, has returned to her home in Gravenburst for the holidays. -The garden party held on Mr. Jos. Walks' lawn was a success, proceeds amounting to $51. -The many friends of the Rev. Veale will he pleased to learn that he is recovering. -Miss Mil- lie Beek has returned home after visit- ing ber cousin, Miss Violet Walks. - Mr. Jas. Ratcliff has returned from Busi ness College,, S tratford.-M r. Kir- by Robertson has returned home from a visit to his sister, Mrs. Dr. Lacey in Illinois. -Miss Ella Hewitt spent Sun- day under the parental roof. Western Fair, London. The Western Fair of London, Ont., wilt be held this year Sept 7th to 15th, Over three thousand prize lists and several hundred hangers have already been mailed, and the large posters will be sent out in a few days. The Board have this year added over $1500 to the prize list, making the prizes in all classes well worth competing for. Entries are corning in quite fast and space is being allgted accordingly, Over four thousand dollars will be expended on the buildings and grounds this year, and an entirely new and up- to-date entrance on Dundas Street is in course of erection. The Western Fair has taken its place as the leading exhibition of Western Ontario, and manufacturers and mer- chants are not slow to see the advan- tage it affords of bringing their goods before the public. In the arrangement of the prize list the interests of the farming commun- ity have not been lost sight of, and special inducements will he found for the enterprising farmer to show his stock and the products of his farm. There will be an exceedingly inter- esting programme of attractions this year, of which more will be sail later. The Secretary, Mr. A. M. Hunt, would be pleased to mail a prize list to any who have not as yet received one, or give any information regardine the Exhibition,on application to the office London, Ont. • Toronto Fair. The prize list of the Oanadian Na- tional Exhibition to be held in Toronto, Ont., Aug, 27 to Sept. 10, which is now being distributed, contains many changes compared with last year. In nearly every department thereis a ma- terial increase in the premiums. In the horse department classes have been added for Welsh, Shetland and. Hack- ney ponies, and the prizes in the first sectian of the breeding classes have in several instances been doubled. It has also been decided to award the prem in ms in the trials of speed on the three heat plan, each heat tc be considered a completed contest and the money to be divided according to the place won in each heat. The Dominion Short Horn Associa tion having increased their grant for prizes to $2,000 the exhibition management have responded to with a like n.mount, so that there is consider- able expansion also in the cattle de. pertinent. In the sheepdivision wether sections have been added to each breed. of sheep. In this connection it might be mentioned that the management are making arrangements that will en- able sheep to be judged under cover. In the poultry dopa rtmen t sin um ber of suctions have been added and the list has been increased by an extra number of specials. Several changes have been made in the dairy departpaent,and the building is to be supplied with improv., ed rolri storage. In the floral division ti pi z • is added for the best and most origu,al floral design. Several sections recnrnmended by the Ontario Beekeep- ers' Association have been added to the honey classes. Several sections have also been added to the women's aura children's departments. The totid increase all round amounts to close upon $1000, which means that the ag- gregate sum given in premiums by the Canadian• National Exhibition is ap- proaching the $50,000 mark. He has disposed of his 100 -acre farm to Thos. Mollard and son, the price being $1500.--L. Ravelle bought Robb. Pol lock's 50 -acre faun at Harpley for the sum of $3,300 and a few days later dis- posed of it to Jno. Brown, realizing $3,500 from the sale. -Miss Ellis is vis- iting her sister, Mrs.AlbertMollard.- W. Devine spent Suuday at his home here, -Miss E. Cooper of London is visiting her sister,. Mollard.-Monday be- ing observed as Dominion Day be- tween four and five thousand people. from all parts gathered here to spend the day. The weather was fine and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. Boating and dancing were the princi- pal amusements. Dashwood MONEY LOST. -Between the home of the undersigned, 2i miles North of Dashwood, and Mr. J. The village trustees have been busy with a large gang of men during the past week putting down the cement walks iu the village, which when com- pleted will make a great improvement. -Milton Cook of Berlin spent the holi- days with friends in town. -Messes. Eidt.-Sev• eral loads of campers and their effects passed through the village last week on their way to one of the nicest sum- mer resorts there are in Ontario at Grand Bend Park. Dan Mclsaac of Windsor spent a few days with friends here during the• week. -The annual Children's Day Fes- tival in conne^tion with the.Evarigeli- cal Sunday school will be held •in" the church here on July 22nd. -The pub- lic school closed for the summer holi- days on Friday. -Rev. A. D. Gischler of Zurich was in the village last week looking for a horse. Zion (Intended for last week.) The anniversary services which was held in this church on Sunday, June 17, were a decided success. Large crowds greeted the speaker, Rev. J.E. Holmes, both morning and evening. The freewill offering exceeded the amount asked for. -A large crowd gathered at the church on Sunday af- ternoon to witness the unveiling of a monument erected to the memory of the late Joseph Morley, by the Gran- ton Lodge of Woodman of the World. A very appropriate sermon was preached by Rev. Fair after which all proceeded to the cemetery where a very impressive service was conduct- ed by the above Order. -Rev. Hazle- wood preached his farewell sermon on Sunday evening. The Rev. gentle- man has won many friends during his short stay here and the best wishes go with him to his new field of labor. - The many friends of Miss Phoebe Lingard, who has been confined to her bed for the past eight months, will be sorry to learn that she is .gradually growing weaker and that no hope is entertained for her recovery. -Miss Lizzie Ilern is visiting her brother, George, on the Sth con., Blanshard.- Messrs. C. T. Brooks and James Tay- lor of Exeter visited their brothers here on Sunday. -Henry Towle's new home presents a very fine appearance, and when completed will he one df the hest on the line. Joshua Hussey, the young man who went out to quiet the crowd was shot by one of them. He now lies critical- ly ill at his home with 27 shots, size B, in his body, neck and head. The men are 'held upon the charge of wounding. The case will come up this week. In case the victim dies the charge will be changed to one of murder. Exeter, June 23, 1906. To THos.
