ittzt. school. Concert.
The concert given by the High
School Department Literary Seciety
in the Opera Hoose on Tuesday even-
ing was a suceess in every. respect.
The program was exceptionally good
and was given almost wholly- by the
pupils of the ELS. Department. The
large audience was kept interested
throughout the two and one-half hours
during which the program was being
renclined., Happy and Pleasing ad
dresses were delivered by Dr. Lutz,
Chairmen of the meeting; Reeve Car-
ling and Mr. P., Fra,yne. The solo by
Mr. Fleming was sung in excellect
voice and was well reeeived. Individ-
ually or collectively the members of
the Literary Society contributed chor-
uses, readings and essays; as well as a
vocal solo, violin solo, duet, wand drill,
recitation, two scenes from "Sehool for
Scandel," and a debate, all of which
was rendered in an intevesting And
pleasing manner. The debate was par-
ticularly good, and was on- "Resolved
that Manual Labor has done more for
the world than Invention." The af-
firmative was taken by Clinton Ho-
garth and Winnie Carling, while the
negative Was upheld hy Percy Hooper
arid Winnie Howard. Rev. R. J. M.
Perkins and Rev. Wm. Martin acted
as judges and after carefully weighing
the respeetive merits of the two cases
decided in favor of the negative, the
Rev. Godwin anuonucing the decieiou.
The success of the concert reflects
much credit upon Mr. Fleming and his
assistants as well as ppori the Literary
Society generally. Much time and
pains must have been necessary in the
preparation. The proeeeds amounted
to about $65.
