WOMAN'S PROGRESS.
Honors That Nave Been Accorded
to Two London. Girls.
For the first time in the history of
the universities of medicine in Eng-
land, a woman -and a young one,
too -has been appointed professor on
terms of absolute equality with men.
Miss Winnie Cullis, a London girl
and graduate of Newnham college,
who has just been made co -professor
and lecturer on physiology in the
University of Medicine, London, has
scarcely passed her twenty-fifth year.
She was a fellow student at Newn-
ham with Miss Dia Smedley, who is
recognized as the leading woman
chemist of England, Miss Smedley,
also only twenty-five, has just gone
back to Newnham, her alma meter,
as lecturer on chemistry. She is the
only woman who has ever read a pa-
per before the British Association
for the a.dvancement of Science. So
great was Miss Smedley's success on
'the recent presentation of her paper,
that the association invited her to
go to South Africa, neat year, all
expenseS paid, to deliver an address
on an allied scientific subject. Miss
Smedley, although one of the most
learned of England's proverbially
blue -stocking university women, is
pretty and remarkably tasteful in her
dress. Some one remarked of her

As the temperaturo rises, the avid-
ity of bacterial growth inereaesks.
When the temperature reaches 70
degrees. bacteria grows very rapidly;
int a temperature of SO degrees to
90 degrees they grow snore rapidly
still; and at a temperature of ahout
100 degrees the growth of some spoc-
ics of bacteria Is most rapid or au.
All this is generally understood.
but it is not generally recognizo
that if the temperature is raid
sonenehero above those higher limits,
the bacterift do not grow so "'tepidly.
If the temperature is raised to 120
degrees, moot. of these ore:autism find
conditions unfavorable to their life1
and grow 'eery slowly; Indeed many
af them cease to grow at all. At
xperatures above this the ordin-
ary "milt bacteria entsrely fall to

be seen that in goneral the growth
of the kinds of bacteria that product.

From these fitcts of course it fol-
lows that the keeping of milk wili b
very elosely dependent upon tem-
perature. At high temperatures (00
deg.) milk will temr very rapidly. At
somewhat lower temperatures (+0 de-
grees), the souring is not quite so
rapid, but still it takes plaee in a
conmarativery few hours. At lower
temperatures still, in the vicinity of
freezing. the souring and all other
changes may be delayed for a long
time; and if milk can be frozen, it
may be retained indefinitely without
any appreciable change taking place
in it.

MOULD ON BUTTER.
Following is a copy of some sug-
gestions made by the Montreal Pro-
duce Merchants' Associations as to
points to be covered in a circular to
be issued by. Prof. J. W. Robertson,
the dairy commissioner, to butter -
markers and patrons with a VIM'S, as
to the prevention of mould on but-
ter.
-Factories should be thoroughly
cleaned by liberal whitewashing with
lime and the use of any other ger-
micide that experience eau suggest.
As dampwood is a hotbed for
breeding and disseminating spores of
various kinds, care should be taken
to have the work of factories al-
ways sound and dry, carefully re-
moving all damp -and decaying piec-
es, particularly from the floors and
gutters. Drainage should be carried
away from the factory beyond smell-
ing distance by water -tight vented
and trapped drains-.
Factory refrigerators should be
kept as dry tee possible and nothing
but sound ,wood allowed to remain
in their structures.
Particular care should las taken
that butter boxes are made only of
thoroughly seasoned wood carefully
and properly pare/fined.
Only the best and purest parch-
ment paper should be used for lin-
ing the bookes. Thi e peeler while
awaiting use should be kept in a
thoroughly dry, clean place; before
used on the butter it should be care-
fully soaked in a solution of brine
and formalin. It should never be
applied in a dry state; and parti-
cularly it should never be used after
being wet wi.th pure water.
Great care should be taken in con-
veying butter from the factory to
the railway station. lt should be
exposed as little as possible and for
as short, time as posr,ible.

225 Inches of Porker's Cuticle
Grafted on Patient.
Dr. Hamilton Browning, teacher ol
dinical surgery in the University ol
Virginia hospital, has succeeded in
grafting the skin of a 2 months old•
pig upon a large surfaco of one of
the patients under his charge.
As a general rule, grafting is made
by taking tho skin, from the body of
the person upon whom tho graft is
to be made, or from the bodies of
the generous persons who are not
afraid of a little pain. Dr. Brown-
ing, however, could use neither ol
these methods, as the surface to be
grafted. covered 225 square yards of
area on the thigh of the young elan
patient, who had been injured in a
ileallway accident.
Two weeks elapsed before the
wound was ready for the operation.
The treatment to which the pig was
subjected was thorougn, if no raore,
First the animal Was shaved and
washed with warm water and green •
soap. Then it was rewashed in the
same way and a thick coat of elle
green soap was allowed to remain
upon it for hours. Next it was
en another thorough scrubbing with'
green soap and alcohol. After thi4
its body was inelosed with a strong
bichloride of mercury poultice, :wind'
was leen on for ten hours.
On the clay the grafting began tin
pig was chloroformed and thin shan
ings of skin were taken from, i•te an(
