was thrown off a young horse. on the

He will soon be able to return to work.
-Mr. John Ratz, of 1Chiva, raised a
splendid barn on Thursday, last week.
-Our town has been over -run the past
week with medical men. On Friday
evening while Dr. Shrieves was in
Shipka, two professors came to town
and performed some marvellous tricks
such as running a red hot. iron throngh
their bare hands and after a few appli-
cations of their salve, the wound was
healed. The people were amazed and.
bought the salve as fast as it could be
handed out. The majority of them
iire sorry for their rashness and wish
they had their money back. -The re-
mains of the late Miss Ella Morlock,
daughter of the late Julus Morlock,
was brought here from Exeter on Mon-
day and laid to rest in our cemetery.
Miss Morlock was born here and had
many friends, who will indeed be sor-
ry to hear of her sudden demise, her
illness being of short duration, and
manv here were unaware of her illness.

ter of Capt. John Sutherland, 93rd
-Highlanders, and was born at herfath-
er's place, "Woodlands," in 1835. She
married the late Andrew Chisholm, of
this city, who died in. 1812, and since
that time has resided with her family
here. For years Mrs. Chisholin had
been known for her activities in char-
itable and church , work, and though
latterly age 13ad caused her to gradual-
ly withdraw from these, her interest in
all such matters never 'flagged. 'It was
her pleasure te make others happy.
She was one of the oldest members of
St. Andrew's congregation. Two sons
survive-Welnyss S. :1311isholm, of the
Merchants' Bank, Orediton, 'and An-
drew G. Chisholm, Barrister, of 'this
city." Mr. and Mrs. Chisholm attended
the fnneral on Monday.

cottage at Maple Grove. They intend
remaining several weeks.-Ohae. Mc-
Leau, of the Standard Bank, has been
transferred to Beaverton. Charlie will
be missed around town as he is a. jolly
good fellow. -Miss Nettie McPhee has
returned home after a pleasant visit
with friends in Port Huron and Sarnia.

Lindsay's store, left last week for her
home in Guelph, where she will spend
her holidays. -Much sympathy is ex-
tended to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Yorke
in the loss of their little daughter,
Martha Kathleen. The child died in
Mrs, Charley Mann and children left a ed a short time ago, and the remains

had the misfortune to break her leg
a few days ago. -Mr. Geo. Perkins fell
out of a cherry tree a few days ago
and broke a couple of bones in his
wrist. -Master Garnet Oudmore, son
of R. Cudmore, had the misfortune to
have his leg broken at the thigh by
being struck by a hand car. He had
been on the car which was being run
out of the way of the freight train
when he jumped off and the accident
Joccurred.-One day recently as Mr.

turned around, throwing him to the
ground. As he was up a considerable
distance he received a severe shock,
which confined hint to bed for several
days, but we are pleased to state no
bones were broken.
Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Hodgins. -Mr. J.
F. Roberts has moved his family to
Grand Bend. -Thos. Ticknor has gone
to Trinidad, Colorado, where he will
'spend some time. The family will re-

week, where the annual retreat of
priests of the Diocese were being held.
-The marriage took place in Detroit.
on June 30th, of Mr. .lames Maloney,
formerly of Shipka, to Miss Bridget
McDonough, of the 12th con. of West
Williams. Mr. and Mrs. Maloney
spent a few days here last week with
friends. --Mr. Jas. Garden, who has so
efficiently managed the business for
some time past iti the absence of his
father in the contracting business, is
now a member of the firm; which in
future will be known as A. J. Garden
& Son.

Cavalier. N. D., are visiting friends

E. Zeller and intends moving his dwel-

the Coast. 'We trust the doctor will
enjoy his well-earned rest. Dr. Wal-

cipal of the Public School, has gone on

Quite a nuniber from here took in the
L.O.L. celebration at Hensall Monday.
-Mr. John Deichert, Jr., left on Wed-
nesday for Chicago to undergo another
operation for appendicitis. He has had
a good share of trouble the past year
and it is sincerely hoped that this
operation will restore him to health. -
Misses Gladys and Rose McNevin and
Master Gordon, of Hensall, are visiting
their grand parents, Mr. mid Mrs. M.
Zeller, during the holidays. -Messrs.

returned from Woodstock where they
were attending the funeral of their

The doctors operated on Miss Ida Os-
wald, .of the Bronson Line, on Wednes-
day afternoon. The patient has been
prostrated for some titne, with that
now frequent disease, appendicitis, and
it was thoaght at one time she wonld
pull through without the use of the
knife. This hoe, however, was not
realized, and, hence the operation,
which is said to have been quite, skill-
fully and successfully accomplished.
The local Medicos were assisted by Dr.
Gunn, of Clinton, who left immediate-
ly afterwards for Detroit to join Mr.
John' Deichert and his brother, whom
he will accompany to Chicago, and be
in attendance at the operation on the
former gentleman. -Mr. H. C. Doan,
V.S., .who had a narrow escape from
instant death on .July 1st, by . being
kicked And tramped upon, by a heavy
stallion, is, we are pleased, to State,
getting along as ,well as can be expect-
ed under the circumstances. His leg
and collar bones were broken, besides
a number of fibsand other bruises of
a serious nature.

ing the road to drift badly with SUM.

$322.83 were passed and orders issued
in payment. Council adjourned to
meet, Sept. 5th, at one o'clock.

WEDDING. -Another great victory

Oue week a bride is taken from our
midst and carried to distant shores,
while others are brought here to cheer
and brighten the home of our young
men. This time Detroit contributes
to the happiness of another home here
and that home is Mr. Chas. Layton. of
the 2nd concession, who captured Miss
Nettie McDonald, second daughter of
Mrs. Angus D. McDonald, of Detroit,
as his bride. The wedding took place
in Detroit on June 30, and after a brief
honeymoon in Western points, they
arrived -in Brucefield on Thursday and
were driven to the groom's home where
a grand reception was given them.
About forty guests, friends and rela-
tives, assembled to extend their hear-
tiest wishes to the bride and groom.
The evening was spent in many social
games and. then a light lunch was
tastily provided, which consisted of
bride -cake and ice cream. The happy
couple received many handsome and
useful presents, testifying to the high
esteem in which they are held. Their
many friends join in wishing them a
life of peace and happiness, coupled
with health and -prosperity.

Mrs. H. Townsend took its flight to her
Make" on Friday.. As the last hope of
prolonging bee life yet for a little. time
she submitted. W an Operation • Thurs-
day, bat; the ravages of disease, which
wrecks this earthly tenaple of ours had
gone too far and she fella prey to her
trouble on the day above mentioned.
Mrs. Townsend, whose maiden name
was Miss Hall, was &resident of Botti-
neau, N.D., and some 22 years ago was
married to her now bereaved husband
at the above place. Five children were
born to them. Alittle over ayear ago
Mr. Townsend' moved his family back
to the scene of his 'childhood and took
up land on the 2nd concession, where
he was .doing well, -but now his heart
is sad and his life lonely and the dear
children are deprived of a loving and
kind mother. During her short stay
here she snasie many warm friends
who will be sorry to hear of her death.
She was a woman that took a lot of
comfort sant of her home and her only
delight eves to please her husband and
children and to keep her home bright
and cheerful and many a Pleasant ev-
ening was spent . at her hone.. The
sympathy of the community is extend-
ed to the sorrow -stricken husband and
children.
