the captain said: "Leave the room,
and keep out orit during the re -
((inhaler of the trip." Which they
did.
Unbeknown to the poker players,
these men had already been caught
cheating at bridge whist in the din-
ing room. The steward revealed to
losers the fact that the mon had
come aboard with the handsome and
popular woman who first proposed
bridge, and was among the most en-
thusiastic players.
This precious trio had pretended
not to know each other. Now that
sort of deception was useless. The
affable and obliging sharpers were
cut dead thereafter, and the pretty
young girl who had been put . into
/the same state room with the .gam -
biers' female accomplice demanded
other quarters.
A PRONTIER OF I3ELLS.

Ever since Customs 'duties were
imposed, each separate cnentry has
had to cope with smugglers. Italy
is one of the nations which suffer
most. For many years she has been
exercised in mind to discover a me-
thod of areventing dishonest pel•sons
from carrying things from Swiss to
Italian territory, but without any
great measure of success attendieg
her efforts. Now an ingenious Ital-
ian has devised what is bein,g called
a frontier of bells. Lines of wires
are stretched. along the boundary,
and on these wires are hung a num-
ber of small bells. The bells are
hung on very sensitive springs, so
that it is impossiale to touch the
wire ever so lightly without refacing
the bells tinkle with a clear ring
that can be heard easily by the pa-
trols. It is useless for wouldsbe
smugglere to attempt to cut the
wires; such an attempt would set
innumerable bells ringing, and would
bring the patrol down upon them in
clotible-quick time. •

There is a great field in Egypt -for
tbe efforts of an enlightened ruler.
'Not only will its delightful winter
climate, and hoary antiquities con -
ilium to draw wealth from the j..
valid, the tourist and the rich loung-
er, but, it is said, that Egypt's un-
developed resources are enormous. It
will only take proper development in
its mineral wealth, for example, to
make it a. great factor in the future
financial world. It is thought that
in a few, years Egypt will supply
most of the gold and silver for Ea.

T.ALIC ABOUT DYEING.
One of the attainments of the
bouisekeeper of the eighteenth and
early part of the nineteenth centary
was a knowledge of the poesibilities
not only of dye stuffs bat of the use
of vegetable dyes from plants and
herbs their roots and bark.
The revival of rag carpet wealing
in the form oi rugs woven from
white or colored rags has also re-
vived interest in the dyes pf oldon
time, which were more permanent
then. are those from twentieth cen-
tury coal -tar produats.
There is no blue so good as the
old-fashioned indigo blue, and from
indigo we may get a range el color
from the softest of "baby blue" to
blue -'black. It is cheap, hnd
perfeetly fast, and in cornice-
elon with yellow and orange, or
with copperas or walnut dye gives

The Turkey red and cardinal •eta
dyes of commerce give a better and

and easily obtained. Bits of old
iron lett standing in water will man.-

knows there is no danger of its fad-
ing. Fustic also gives a geet9 yel-
