awn Sr., who departed this life on Mon-
day, June 1, at the ripe old age of 83
years, 7 -months, 13 days. Deceased
- was up in the village on Saturday and
passel:I the day in his usual way. On
Sunday morning be took a sudden at-
tack of apoplexy and became uncon-
scious from which he never recovered.
Mr. Fahner came to this country in
.1849 from Germany and was one of the
first settlers in tliis vicinity, baying
bad to undergo many hardships before
ate had a comfortable home for himself.
He was a kind neighbor and a loving
,busband, being a great favorite with
.old and young, honest, industrious,
conscientuona Christian and oue who
was always willing to giye a helping
•hand to the needy. He will he grea t-
ly missed in the village and especially
-with the older people, who thought a
-great deal of bim and respected• him
very ranch. One by one our aged cia
zeus are crossing the bar and we real-
ize that "life is short and time is fleet-
ing." The remains were interred in
the Orediton cemetery Wednesdny,
the Rev. G. D. Damm officiating, after
,whicth an appropriate sermon was
;preached in. the nivangelical church,
• 'ofwhich the de ceased was a devoted
member. He leaves to mournhis de-
mise a wife, thvee sons, Frederick, of
• Howerd City, Mich., John and _Chris-
tian of this viliztge, and one daughter,
Mrs. Matthew Wein, of this village,
besides .a number of relatives and a
large citcle of friends and ecqUaint-
anees, Who have the sympathy of thie
vicinity in this their hour of sorrow
and bereavement.

Worts'who has sold his dreg business
to Mr. W. H. Bertram, intends leaving

that time has been very successful. He
has earned an excellent reputation as
a. druggist and in every way given sat-
isfaction to his numerous patrons in
Parkhill and surrounding country.

he has made hosts of friends who will
be sorry to see him leaee town. He
intends taking a trip to the Soo after
which it is his intention to locate per-

of water a few evenings ago Horace
Schram met with a painfnl accident.
He wit off the tank to pick up tbe hose
ivitich had dropped and the wheel trip-
ped him and he fell underneath the
wheel which squeezed his leg pretty
badly before the wagon could be
brought to a stop. He has hist about

Smith is recovering from the effects of
her recentaccidera. She was in the
act of mixing lime and carbolic acid
when some of the mixtere fievv into
her eyes almost blinding her.

STAGE ROUTE TO BE SOLD.—Mr. J.
W. Orme, the well-known owner of
the stage which operates between here
and London, has decided to sell out.
He intends to retire from business, af-
ter some fourteen years of close atten-
tion, and will enjoy a well earned rest.
The route is one of the most ref:antler-
ative of the many stage rontes out of
London, andwillbe disposed of at a
reasonable figure. It is a good busi-
ness chance.
Doemes.—Our town has been sad-
deued this week by the removal of two
more of our old residents in the per-
sons of Mrs. Priscella E. Allen, and
Mr. Alexander McKenzie, who passed
to the great beyond last week. Mrs.
Allen, who has been residing with her
daughter, Mrs. Thomas ktodgins, has
been in poor health for some time but
the geheral breakiug np of the system
was the immediate cause of death. She
Was a highly respected woman of good
principal and always took a deep in-
terest in her home. The deceased -had
reached the good old age of 83 years,
The funeral took place from her tete
residence on Tuesday to Bostwick CeM.

zie has been coufieed to his bed for
some time and although the best medi-
cal attendance was procured and tbe
assiduous nursing of his itnmediate
friends were lavished upon him, the
stroke of death could not be averted
and on Tuesday he was called away to
pay nature's debt, Mr, McKenzie has
been residing with his datestliter, Mao
J. W. Anderson, for some time and
was well known andhighly respected
in this Tillage. Old age was the im-
mediate cause of death, he being in his
84th year. The funeral took place on
Thursday from the residence of Mr.
Anderson. The bereaved ones has the

DETAINED AT QUEBEC.
Porty-two of the Lake Champlain's
Passengers Have Trachoma.
Quebec, June 2.Forty-two foreign im-
migrants who were landed at this Pert
Sunday from the steamer Lake Cham-
plain were cent to the Jeffrey Hale and
Hotel Dieu Hospitals. Yesterday the me-
dical examination of Innnigrants who ar-
t:Wed by the Lake Champlain showed
that forty-two steerage passengers des-
tined to settle in Canada and the United
States were infected with traleArna. They
were classed as detained immigrants for
minute examination In order to diseov-
er whether they would be allowed to re-
main or be deported. This information
was communicated to them. When they
threatened to become turbulent Mr.
Doyle, local immigration agent, lost no
time in acting, as he requested the ser-
vices of the Provincial police, and, under
guard of a detachment from this force,
the infected immigrants were taken to
the city hospitals, where they will re-
main until their eases are looked into,
with the prospect of being returned to
Russia at the expense a the steamship

British Emblem Hauled Down by a
Philadelphia Mob.
Philadelphia, June 2. — The plac-
;ng of a British flag on a pole

gins, at 3,414 North Phillip street, caus-
ed a small riot on Saturday morning.
There were. many American flags dis-

5ight of the British emblem on Mem-
arial Day, angered the crowd. A mob
of several hundred persons soon gath-
!red and demanded that the flag be
taken down. Rankins was out of
the house at the thee, but his wife
nade no move„to appease the crowd.
`Get a rope," shouted a tnan in the
nob, and volunteers ran for it. The
tope was quickly thrown over the
lagpole, and amid the shouts and ex-
ecrations of the excited mob the Bra-
sh . emblem was hauled down. This
done, the crowd made no move to-
ward dispersing, but waited for the
