IMPALED ON A POLE.
Sept. 0.—Patrick Wim
lost his life while in Tyeneinnga, near
this city, working with a threshing
machine yesterday. Wim was des -
tend; ng a‘ladder with a pitchfork in
his hand, when one of the rounds, of
the ladder broke and he fell to the
ground beneath. The handle of the
fork broke and penetrated his abdo-
men to a depth of over a feet. The
poor fellow bled to death in five min-
utes. He was a 'married man of 45
years of age.

er, William, making his way to Ham-

Winnipeg, Sept. 0.—The Canadian Me-
thodist' Church through its General Con -
femme set its hand to the mis-
sion problem of the developing west and
solved it on a generous scale amid great
enthueiasin. 4pparently nearly every
delegate was aeized of the importance of
the subjecthbefore it was presented, and
half the recommenilations of the come
mittee Ware adopted before anyone ask-
ed for any explanations. On a question
being asked, Mr. N. W. Rowell, ICC.,
ef Toronto, on behalf of the committee,
rose and delivered an. eloquent address
in which he pictured the increasing tide
of immigration and upsprintong ,of
scores of new eammunities, 'which should
be reached by, the Methodist Chinch
throughout the Canadian west. VI%
Rowell was pritied With first-hand facts
gathered in a recent toin, and when he
sat down there was' great. enthusiasm.
TheCortference then adopted unanimous-
/jr recommendations which provide for
the appointment of four e Superintend-
elits for home mission work i‘n the west,
oite for new Ontario, two for Manitoba
and the Northwest and one tor ,lkitish
Columbia. These- men shall give their
whole time to the supervision of the
work of the missionaries in their respec-
tive fields, and sballhhave usociated'
with them one CorreSponding Secretary,
and there shall also be established a
spatial fund for the, extension of the
• work, in order to keep up the average
allowanee for the workers and their spe-
cial needs. The adoption of the plan
was consummated in a dramatic mo-
ment when. the delegates rose and sang
the doxology and then adjourned the
session.

only one- there that ships apples to
Winnipeg, and is therefore the one re-.
ferred to in the repOrt in which a fruit
inspector spoke of apples, the size of
• plums, being found at the pressed ends
of barrels containing Duchess appks. To
•a Globe reporter Mr. Caldwell stated
• yester4a3r that these small apples were
used solely for packing purposes, with a
view to rendering the mass of apples in
• the barrels more solid, and less liable,
to be bruised by knocking about. Mr.
Caldwell, who has had much experience
in packing fruits, explained • that his
• firm had resorted to the expedient, after
many experiments, of putting ten or
twelve small apples in some of the bar-
rel4 in order to fill in_intersections and
