THE MAGISTRATE SCORED.
Lt. political meeting was about to
be held in a cotiatry town in Ire-
land, and, disturbances being antici-
pate:a, it, was thought advisable to
call in the aid of military. Some
soldiers were accordingly sent.
When they arriveca in charge of an
officer it was found necessary to bil-
let them on the people of the neigh-
borhood. '
The ra>ont requisitioned for the offi-
cer happened to be occupied by the
resident, magistrate, who very natur-
objected to, being turned out,
Ris remonstrances, however, were in
wain, for the officer insisted on his
undoubted right.
Suddenly however an idea struck
the magistrate .and taking some pa --
per he wrote the following order to
the officer.
'Owing to the disturbed state of
the district 1 will require the mili-
tary to patrol the roads all night."
, The officer knew ho was bound to
obey this order, as he and his men
were at the disposal of the magis-
trate if required. He therefore
thought it better to come to terms
with the magistrate, particularly as
the night was, bitterly cold and snow
on the ground.
So the magistrate, being left his
room, deeided there was no necessity
to have the roads patrolled.

The baby who is always plump al-

The medicine which keeps babies in

of the average royal understudy has
more than doubled within the last
couple of decades.
Not that the "billet" was ever a
particularly "soft" one. CoUnt
Ca,po d'Istria., President of Greece,
originated the idea, and he had the,
mortification of losing
TWO OF HIS BEST DOUBLES
in less than- eighteen months. One,
a peasant named Botzaris, who ex-
aictly resembled Count Capoin face,
form and figure, was stabbed, to the
heart at dusk one evening, while
driving home in his master's carriage
from the Panhellenion, or Grand
Council of State. The other, a
lieutenant of irregular cavalry, was
-literally hacked to pieces by a band
of no fewer than seven assassins in
one of the main streets of Athens.
' After that no ono would take over
the job on any ternia.whatever;s so
tho president had perforce to content
himself with publicly promising that
whosaever assassinated him should,
if captured, be punished by being im-
mured within brick walls built round
them up to their chins, and that they
should, be kept supplied with food in
this species of torment until they
died. The threat, however, fell flat.
The Count, was murdered shortly af-
terwards. And the terrible promise
made by the deceased president was
carried out to the letter' by his gov-
ernment,,,the sufferers (his assassins)
acing two wealthy landowners named
Mavromichaelis, respectively the bro-
ther and son of a Mainote chieftain
whom Count Capo had imprisoned.

that none outside the Emperor's in
mediat6 entourage suspected the ruse;
nor were the facts generally known
to the world, until they were made
public by Prince Bismarck, some
years after his Imperial master's de-
cease.
In Spain, where Court 'etiquette is
exacting and inexorable beyond all
canception, it would be well-nigh im-
possible even for a sovereign who
was a man or woman grown to do
without an understudy. To a child,
such an ordeal would be quite out of
the question. Consequently, the, lit-

"Not a minute," answered Mr.

symptoms of your old kidney trou-

"Not the slightest," he said.
"You are sure that Dodd's Kidney

"Absolutely sure. Why, my wife

our little girl, born in December, of

the most miraculous cure.
