17Eftnirc'r GVIld'VIC A FOREGON/1
CONCLUSION,
Buffalo Sept, 24.—The first day of
the trial of Leon F Czolgosz charged
with the murder of President McKin-
ley, resulted in much that was of in-
terest, and its close showed that great
progress in the presentation. of the
ease had 'been made. The
jury was completed during the
afternoon, and. before adjournment
the testimony of the doctors who had
charge of the case had been introduc-
ed, Of these Dr. Gaylord, who 'Per-
formed the autopsy, Dr.
Herman formed
and Dr. Matthew D. Mann, Nyho
attended the President during' his .111-
flees, gave evidence.
--For the test time since his appear-.
Mace before the court Czolgosz
opened his lips to speak. He said only
one word,' and that was "Guilty." ,Disr."
trict Attorney Penney addressed the
prisoner at the opening Of the case of
the prosecution, and read the charge
against hini. "How do you plead?"
was asked by the District AttorneY.
"Guilty," replied the prisoner in a low
tone, scarc.ely audible to the jary,. Dis-
trict Attorney Penney pointed out; how-
ever, that under the statutes this plea
could not be entered, and asked the
court to enter a plea of not. guilty.'
Of the medical men examined, the
testimony of Dr, Herman ..Myriter was
important, 'inasmuch as it brought out
the fact that the reason why the fatal
bullet was not located at the autopsy
was because of the unwillingness of
the President's familY to have the body
further mutilated by their instru-
ments. Both Dr. Mynter and. Dr.
Mann' agreed that the primal cause of
death was the gunshot wound in the
stomach. The people's case will un-
doubtedly be concluded at the morning
session to -morrow, and it is improbable
that any defence will be put in.
The counsel fo,r Czolgosz, former
Supreme Court Justices Loren L. Lewis
and Robert C. Titus, chosen by the Bar
Association of Erie Counti,, and Carl-
ton E. Ladd saw him again yesterday
before the time for the Opening of
