THE RESULT
The 7th of November, 1900, has pass-
ed and the government of Sir Wilfred
Laurier is again in power. It is also
trn power after a victory which may
-well be called a notable one. All the
Ministers are returned, while the Con-
servative leaders are beaten in each
'province. Sir Charles Tupper falls in
Nova Scotia, Mr.Foster in Ne NV Bruns-
-wick, Dr. Montague in Ontario, Mr.
Bura.eron in Quebec and. Hugh John
mcDonen in Manitoba. Haggart,Prior
and Casgraia alone are left. Of the
...second rank Mills and Davin are gone,
while Borden in Novia Scotia and
'Clarke Wallace and McNeil b 0 t •
are left. But with all this to discour-
age it must be renaembeved
gone
On-
-taxi° has one so positively against
,
the government that the victory de-
oisive, as it appears, is full of grave
danger. Ontario is the brains as well
.as the treasury of the Dominion and
its voice is one that 'must be heard.
'The:defeat of Dr. Landerkin, Wm.
'Gibson and James Mc.Mullen shows
the temper of the people very plainly.
'Once it was an axiom of the Globe
that the voice of Outario is the verdict
• ;of the future. It may sit back and
watch French Canadian attempts at
government and when this is sup-
plemented by what Sir Richard Cart-
• -Wright once called the sherds and
-.patches, soinething will surely break
isomewhere. 1V1eantirne we can watch
results and see what will turn up for
:something. startling is near at hand.
But what about the local government
at Toronto? There is,a hand writing
,on the wall for it and with twenty-two
smajority for the Conservatives won in
-the face of all that two governments
'could do, the nails in the provincial
,coffin are ready to be driven home.
-What a housecleaning will then take
• Three. What a chance Whitney will
?have to make a name. How will the
various departments look when the-
-drawers are turned out? How will the
army of workers, bailiffs, forest rang-
rers, license inspectors, etc., feel .then ?
Wait for another Year.

1Vedneaday afternoon. The authori-
ties cif the college quite a time ago
became aware of the fact that more
dentists were graduating than tbere
was rooni for, They went to work
and by raising the standard of ma -
trier -dation have now good results.
This year only 152 students have
registered, while last year. there
were 170, and the year before 202.
Dean 1\711110a says that 70 dentists
graduating every year is altogethet
to many. There is not more than
room for forty at the outside.
Weak indeed mast a Government
be that can be driven out of power in
good times. The general that secur-
ed victory for the Laurier Government
was General Prosperity. The argu-
ment that it is wise to let well enough
alone was a potent one. Yet, even
this argument as not strong enough
to offset the feelingof antagonism to
Mr. Tarte in Ontario. The fact that a
Liberal majority of 12 in this province
was turned into a Conservative ma-
jority of 16 is chiefly tine to the re -
sentiment and alarm caused by the
utterance of the voluble and indis-
creet Minister of P blic w o rks. —Ham il-

Wednesday's poll issued the death
warrant of Messrs. Ross & Com -
patty. The ninth Legislature was
born March 1, 1898. It has yet one
year and five months at the naost to
live. At any moment within that
time, the Liententrut-Governor niay
call on the people to execute the mem-
bers of the aggregation in Quieen's
Park. The death warrant has been
signed, it awaits delivery, but no re-
prieve is possible. Premier Ross, un-

lurid views of Boss Tarte have made
straight the path that will lead him to

WEDDINGS INCREASE, DEATHS DE-
CREASE.
The statistics for the births, marriag-
es and deaths in Ontario during the
first half of the present year show a
very considerable increase in the num-
ber of births and marring -es and a grati-
fying decrease in the number of deaths.
The total increase in the number of
births for the half year, as • compared
with the number of births for the first
half of last year is 496. The increase
in the number of marriages of 669,
which increase is attriboted to the pre-
vailing prosperity. The decrease in
the number of deaths forthe half year
is 850, which is especially gratifying in
view of the increase in population.
SPnie of the contemporaries are sug-
gestina. that everybody niake an ef--
fort to begin -the new century free of
debt.. It is a good suggestion but the
movement must begin from the con-
sumer. The little grocery bill, the
drygoodsaccount,the editors subscrip-
tion must be paid. The money will
be passed on by them to other trades-
men and employees and frorn them, it
will go back into the pockets Of the
producers, who are likewise consumers.
The money paid by you to -day will
come back to you to -morrow from
those who owe you but cannot pay
you until you paid your own debts.
A few hundred dollars put in circula-
tion in this way will pay thousands
of dollars of debts and lighten the bur-
den of innumerable human beings who
are scarcely able to keep their heads
above the wave of adversity.

Already -the Liberal press are talk-

next gerrymander bill. It is rather
galling to us to think that Ontario,

that 49 Liberal majority from the Pro-

o'clock Saturday mornins, fire was dis-
covered in the Windsor Ffouse, a large

made such rapid progress that almost
the entire contents were consumed. A
commercial traveler named Nagel lost
all his boot and shoe samples, and
many of the boarders logt most of their
belongings. The lessee of the premis-
es, John Wright, is a heavy loser. The
building -was owned by Mrs. Payne,
and was insured for only $4,000. Loss
about $8,000.

Mr. Reddit left her in charge of the
