Being requested by a number to give an outline of my European trip I have decided to clo so. Some parts of it will be dealt with more minutely than others and 1'11 try and give it as it oc- curred to me without paint or polish. T secured a passage on the -Lake Hu- ron," a vessel belonging to "The Beaver Line" and one that 'lad crossed the briny deep a number of times, fo • h has been afloat for twenty-five years. It was manned by men of no mean type and commanded by Mr. Thomas, a well-known and much respected sea captain, who sailed at one time from Engeand to Asia a,ncl other Eastern. parts. The Purser was a, young Eng- lish man of 10 years experience and on this particular trip had the of- fice of Chief Steward as well. The other high officers were also men of honorable fame and had sailed on both tropical and polar waters; and could relate some thrilling sea, stories, and during their spare hOurs were always pleased to do so. As a g,eneral rule the food on an English vessel is extra good and this - one was equal to the best in that line. Our treatment at the hands of the offi- cers and stewards was all that could be desired and their kindness will be long and gratefully remembered. Four meals were served every day and a slight tip would get all the fruit you desired between xneals. There were only forty passengers, aboard this vessel as it was hired for the purpose of taking 600 head Of cat- tle to the English market. Many of the readers might think this distaste- ful, but not so. The cattle are entirely separated from the saloon passengers. and are more preferred than as many steerage passengers. To see the cat - tie -men load these cattle was a sight. It took about three and a half hours, to load them a,ncl some of the poor brutes were umnercifolly abused and of all the French gibberish you ever heard it was there. At 4:45 Wednes- day, July 13, the vessel left the Harbor - to be anchored fifteen miles down the - river, from which spot she left at 3 a. m., Thursday. The scenery along the St. Lawrence at all times is beautiful, but during the months of July and August its splendor dazzels the eye of the passing tourists. The Citidal of Quebec was rea, ched 2.15, p.m., Thurs- day. with its many majestic and lin. posing buildings. All along the river the sights and views are well worth viewing and none more so than the small French farms that skirt both sides Of the St, Lawrence. They a,p- pear to be about twenty rods wide and the buildings are so small :met quaint that many remarks from the criticis passed on the:same. Fn Ontario you. notiee Levee farm houses awl out build- ings and fairly well built churches. In Quebec small farm houses and out buildings, but; the grandeur of their churches is unequalled, We sailed slowly along past the pic- tured Alba river and finally reached Father Point where our last Pilot left 115 11 5.15 a.m. 'Friday, The land seems to be getting back. and soon we left the lest trace behind till we neared New Foundland, In crossing the clays, especially if fog. bauks, Which generallyentNoelcieospotpylee vessel as it did the Lake Huron, 'you sight land but it is far distant. The banks are the cliief feeding places of SCreell, Mrs. Nott; bannerettes, Mrs. the cod and it is there that they are Nott, M. Brethour; bracket drapery, ContInued dt Pa e 05 ft, 131 1,
