Bonusur Q11,3S-0011.
The Municipal • committee of the
Legislature has .at length grappled
with the bonasing question, .and the
result, it is hoped,' will :prove satisfac-
tory. It is proposed hereafter that
municipalities will hereafter .beper-
mitted to bonus by 4 general law With-
out going to the private bills commit-
tee, but the bylaw for a bonus :must.
receive a vote. of two-thirds Of the rate!.
payers when it shall be carried; in ad-
dition, a bylaw may be caariedby a
three -fifth vote of ratepayers, 'provid-
ed one-fifth do net oppose. Other pro-
posed restrictions are to be considered.
In short the bonuSing question is to be
left where it belongs, with the muni-
cipalities. Safeguards have been add-
ed, which is hoped Will prevent abases.
Protect the Birds.
Now that the birds are once more
ar-
riving it would he wise to thaw atten-
tion to the benifitsthey confer by the
destruction of.vermin. Last year the
caterpillar pest threatened to destroy
our forests, frnit and shade trees, and
there is fear that the scourge will be
even worse this season. .When the
young worms :tee just hatched they are
a dainty morsel for the Wade. and hosts
of them are thus destroyed by the
feathered tribe. Later on they are too
coarse and few are killed. Protect the
birds should be the Watchword to all.
Even the nauch-maligned sparrow is
one of the most useful in this sphere of
action. The law against the destruc-
tion of inseetivereus birds should be
strictly enforced; and parents shordd
teach their children to protect and ap-
preciate our feathered friends and as-
sistants.
Wedding Bells.
A joyous and happy event, in which
cupid has scored another victory, took
place .at the residence of Mr: John

Rev. C. W. Brown,. at about eight
o'clock, in the presence of the uncles,
aunts aud single: cousins of the :con-
tracting parties --about eighty in all.
After the ceremony was perforthed
and the congratulations Were .received
the whole Company repaired to the,
diningroom where the tables . were la-
den with luxuriesonaintaining for Mr.
and Mrs. Mitchell their enviable reputa-
tion as host and hostess. After supper
the company Spent a very pleasant
evening. The presents to the bride
were nuinerous, handsome and costly,
showing the esteem in which she is
held by -..her friends. The ADVOCATE

them health, wealth and happiness.

A. special. meeting of the Council
was called by the 'Reeve, Monday for
the consideration of a better water
supply for, street watering purposes.
That the present system is inadequate
:aid not at all satisfactory, is conceded
by all and the sooner the matter is
taken in hand aad remediact the bet-
ter., It has been suggested that an
artesian well be sunk, while others
,suggestthat the supply be force
from the river through pipe. io our
mind the latter scheme is the most
feasible, less expensive and most like-
ly to give the desired results. Messrs.
John Taylor, E. H. Howard and J. P.
Ross waited on the council on behalf
of tile manufacturers 000 laid before
them certain proposals which would
greatlyi
assist n carrying the project
of forcing the supply frorn the river
into effect and thereby making it a tilth.
tual benefit to all; they agreeing to
pay a certain percentage of the cost
of construction for theprivilege of
tapping the•main for their use during
the dry season. The Couneil were
inclined to think favorable of the
scheme and while no action was taken
tha5 night it will doubtl.ess be consid-
ered and acted upon in the near fu-
ture.
Vestry Meeting.
The annual vestrY meeting of Triv-
itt Memorial church was held in the
school hall, on Monday evening, at 7
o'clock, and proved to be one of the
most satisfactory and encouraging
meetings in the history of the church.
When the last vestry meeting was held
one year ago, there were unpaid ac-
counts to the amount of over three
hundred dollars, but Mr. John Knight,
the people's warden, made the hearts
of all who were present on Monday
night glad, by informiug them that
all these accounts were now paid and
that there was a clean sheet, with a
balance of twenty-five dollars in the
treasury. The total receipts for the
year were $1987, After the Warden's
report had been adopted the election
of the ,wardens took place. The Rec-
tor, before nominating his warden. ex-
pressed -the great satisfaction which it
afforded him to hear such a splendid
report froth the wardens. All that he
had hoped for at the beginning of the
year had been accomplished. With
respect to the wardens he said. he felt
thankful when he received word in
London last April,to the effect that the
wardens had been elected by the ves-
try and that be was relieved of the re-
sponsibility of appointing a -warden
from among men who were all strang-
ers to him, but he felt more thankful
to -night than he did then. Then he
took it fax granted that the vestry had
appointed good men to fill the offices,
but now he knew that they had. It
had afforded him great pleasure to
work with them, he had always found
them true friends and wise counsel-
lors. Seeing that they had got 'along
so pleasantly last year, and were able
to present such a good report,he would
take great pleasure in appointing Mr.
Thos. Hawkins as his warden for the
coming year. Messrs. Mill and Row-
cliffe thought that ,Mr. John Knight
made such a good warden to represent
the congregation that his services
could not be dispensed with and nom-
inated him for another term. He was
unanimously elected. Captain Kemp
was re-elected as vestry clerk and N.
D. Hurdon and C. H. Sanders were
re-elected Auditors, after which elec-
tion the meeting was adjourned fax
two weeks.
