Clinton Fire
. 1t was Most a disastrous fire which
occurred on Thursday morning at 3 a.
na. and at present: writing is still
smouldering, aucl part of the walls of
the building only remain. The origin
is shrouded in mystery. Night -watch
mall Merman smelt smoke wind on in-
vestigation discovered itiu the rear end
of the: basement
of Is.nl.by's bakery.
Getting to the alarm as quickly es pos-
sible the firemen were soon out and had
several streams of; water playing on
the flames, but notwithstanding they
had an obstinate fire to contend with '
for no sooner was it thought tobe sub-
dued than up it rose again :and again.
From Kirkby's it spread to the other
occupants of the bu.ildiug. For some
time the Clarendon >hotel 'looked to be
in danger and a sharp eye was kept on
it, but Beacom & Son who had just
moved into their new gnarters suffered
next, and the barber parlors of ,

on it, $500 in the London &Lancashire

British, and $500 in the Union Assur-
ance Co.; J, T. Ennnerton $200 in the

siderably over this.
A SPLENDID IDEA,
It was an. American subject, Robert
Choate, of Boston, Mass., who first,
through the Montreal Star, . suggested
the popular patriotic fund taken up by
the children of Canada and United
States, and now receiving' such favour
all over the world. The idea was to
get something started with which
young Cana dal`, could 1)e identified, and.
the presentation of which would bring
the boys and girls of Canada into di-
rect touch with the Queen, who will
treasure the photographs of the boys
and girls. It was proposed to engross
on parchment the name of every
giver to this fund of ten cents and up-
wards. The name of every boy of
girl who collects to subscriptions in
the testimonial is to aPPear in thea
testimonials as a leader in the move -'i,
tient, and the photograph, beairtifnll

who collects fire dollars or upwards is
