violent contraction in values. Stocks
were thrown over without the slight-
est regard to the price they would
bring and at a distressing sacrifice
of values. No end to the helplessness
of the situation seemed in sight,
when, in the last halt-bour of the

concerted action of the clearing

Rock Island, Southern Pacific, the
Union Pacifies, the Northern Pacifies,
Atchison preferred, and, in fact, the
most prominent and active railroad
stocks in the whole list showed
losses all day front 4 to 9 points.
The rallies with the final forcing
down of the money • rate to 6 per
cent. ran from 5 to 10 points.

The day's transactions ran up, to a
total of nearly 1,650,000 shares;.
which is the record for a day's bus
siness. The excitement. was intense
all day, and there can be no' doubt
that a largo volume of transactions
'and a record of many quotations
was entirely lost in the seething and
turmoil of brokers - and operators,
'which surged- over the floor of the.
exchange and about every post • all
day long. The changes iu prices be-
tween sales ran. up to 1., 2 and even
3 points, both on the down grade
and on the recovery. After the,

East Buffalo, N.Y., Dec. 18:--Cattle-The
market was getteroily dull and 15c to 25c
lower on all kinds. There was a fair • at-
tendance of buyers and the market open=
ed fairly active with a continual arrival
of cattle, whiclt had a weakening effect
on the market. The total offerings were
230 loads, including 18 loads of Canada eat -
tie. The demand was principally for choice
butcher cattle. Cows and heifetks sold low-
er and common stockers Waite weak :mil
lower. Choice fresh . cows were in good
demand, shade higher, but common cows
and springet's were, lower and nerd to
sell. There ,Seas a. moderate supply of
calves and fair demand at the 'decline.
Sheep and Lambs -Offerings liberal for
this season; about 00 loads, including abonz
15 loads Cturadtas. .Sheep were rather slow
and dull, while lambssols: fairly; active
on the basis of $5.510 to $5.60 foe choice
