One of the most disastrous* fires that
has; ever visited our town happened on
Sunday morning last when the Power
house owned by Messrs. Tremaine .0
Snell was totally destroyed, together
with all its contents. The fire alarm
was sounded shortly after four o'clock,
but by this the whole interior was a
seething mass with an immense vol-
ume of smoke and fire issuing from
every window. Strange to say, the
fire -alarm with ell its wxldel:tnging, as
if ,possessed of the intelligence that
Morpheus had laid strong hands on
Exeter's two thousand saute: failed to
arouse many from their slumbers and
outside the firemen but few. were on
the scene. A stiff South-easterly wind
was blowing at the time but the fire-
men succeeded in confining the dis-
tractive element to the one build-
ing, although the Marge plate glass
front in Mr. J. P. Ross's store on the
opposite side of the street was badly
damaged by the intense heat, and will
have to he replaced by new. A large
narrater of castings belonging to Mr. A.
Tait, which were stored in the build-
ing were destroyed and the owner will
he a heavy loser. The loss to Messrs.
Treulaine 44 Snell will be upwards of
510,0(10 with an insurance of $4,000.
.1t present the town is in darkness, but
we learn a dynamo has been sentfor
by the Courpany, aznd will be in opera-
tion shortly.

We have just received from the pub -
Halters a, copy of this beautiful song.
The words are by Mrs. Julia. A. Car-
ney, and the music is from the pen of
that well-known cornposer1 Mr. Chas.
Baker. Everything he writes has an
immediate sale, and. this song is no ex-
ception to the general rule. Both the:
words and music are very much above
the general run of songs and we pre-
dict a genuine success for it,
