THREE SPEECHES.
The recent speethes by Mr. Chaim-
berlain, Lord Rosebury and Mr. 241 -
four, have caused no little comment
since their utterances have become
generally known to the rest of the
world. Mr. Chamberlain strikes a
hard blow to France, which has caused
a great deal of enmity between the
two nations. He took for his text cer-
tain atrocious attacks upon Queen Vic-
toria in the French press and read the
French a pretty hard lesson, intima-
ting very clearly that there was a de-
ckled possibility of an alliance between
England, Germany and the United
States which would effectirely neut-
ralize any undue ambitions on the
part of the Frenchmen as against Eng-
lish interests. The speech attracted a
great deal of attention and called forth
some pretty sharp criticisms on every
hand. The Germans depreciated the
use of the word alliance in regard to
the relations between the countries;
the French press was very bitter,
while the French officials definately
repudiated any responsibilities of the
absurdities of a certain class of new

Serious Fire at Oshawa
Oshawa. Ont. Dee. 7, -Early this

Laughlin Carriage Company', leant
