The fourth Anniversary of the new Mahe street Methodist chmedi was held on Sunday and 3londay, Decem- ber 3rd and 4th. The Rev. - H. W. Looke, of ihatham, a foriner pastor of 3luin street, preached two splendid sermons on Sunday. It was noticed that several of the strangers who heard him inthe morning were tunong the first to present themselves for seats at the • evening seevice. The church had not been so avellffiled since the opening as it was on Sunday eve- ning. Mr. Locke was acknowledged by all who knew hint to be an excel- lent preacher when he was stationed in Exeter two years and a half ago, and he is a better preacher now. The fowl supper on Monday evening was a decided success, both as to the quality of the supper ;old to the kindly pat- ronage -of the friends of Exeter told vieinity. The proceeds were • twenty- five per cent. better than the success- ful tea of last year, the toted receipts being upwards of 8130. After supper the main miditorium was nicely filled by happy looking and contented coon- tenantes. On the platform -were Rev's Wm. „Martin, Presbyterian; J. 'W, Ten Eyck, Episcopalian; Chas. Brown, James street; H. W. Locke, Chatham, and the pastor of the church, Ruben chairthan, every one of whom seemed to know how to say the right thing, a somewhat unusual thing at tea meetings. The Main street choir sustained their usual reputation as singers and entertainers. The 'pat- eitetic songs, "Soldiers of the Queen" and "God Save the Queen," were ap- parently received by the audience with the greatest acceptance. stating that it is a most. excellent pow- der for poultry. Farmers, remember that this is the season of the year when all kinds of slickers are numerous. Keep yanr eye on the stranger that wants to give you something for nothing or wants yon to sign a note or agreement of any kind. Keep ;t shot gun and a goocl dog and use both if occasion requires. A writer in the "Review of Reviews" gives this advieei "If You have afarm, twee: it; if not, get one; for the time may come when the population of this country will he largely divided into monopolists, dependents and farmers, and the farmer will be the most inde- pendent of admen, and will be the sav- ing poWer of our institutions." The preacher of one of the Newark (N.J.) churches has annonnced that he has selected the three prettiest girls of his congregation to Act as ushers and thus to lure young men to church. It is doubtful if the saving- of any n amber of boys will offset the loss of Christian spirit the girls of the church will suf- fer who are not ainong the "three prettiest."
