of the governors of McGill Univer-
sity, held here, a cheque was receiv-
ed and accepted from Sir William 0,
McDonald for $62,000, which be de-
sired to be utilized for the purpose
Of endowing a memorial chair in the
University to the late Sir William
Dawson. The conditions attached to
the gift were that an annuity of
$2,500 should be provided ,With it
for Lady Dawson while she lived.

hiding -place of Gordon, the notor-
ious Ottawa. burglar, who is now
under sentence, has been discovered
by the city detectives. But there are
reasons that make it advisable not
to make the location of the place
public. The police made a rich haul
in the hiding -place.

ing Bulletin yesterday published the
following : "The colossal plan. to
control all of the independent tele-
phone companies in the United
States, and to combine therewith
the great telegraph companies and
the five Atlantic cable contpanies,for
which purpose the Telephone, Tele-
graph & Cable Company of America
was incorporated Nov, 9, with a
capital of $30,000,000, received a
severe blow to day, the effect of
which may be far-reaching. This was
none other than the \\ ithclrawal from
the scheme of William C. Whitney,
Thomas F. Ryan, Anthony N. Brady,
William L. Elkins, P. A. H. Widen-
er, and Thomas Dolan, the men
whose support 'made the success of
the enterprise possible, and wiles(
opposition or indifference may be
fatal to its existence."
SASH FACTORY EXPLOSION.
Three Mon reported Fatally Injured-

Montreal, Nov. 23.—A serious ex-
plosion took place ycsferday morn-
ing shortly before 7 o'clock in the
sash and door.factory of Messrs. Pa
vette, on Pathenais street; as the
result of which three men are in the
Notre .Dame Hospital and are likely
to die as the result of their terrible
injuries. Their navies are :—August
Lizette, Narcisse T3ahaie and Joseph
Lacroix. About ten others were
slightly hurt. When the men congre-
gated for work it was customary to
stand around the boiler for warmth.
When thus located yesterday a valve
burst, fearfully scalding `the above
named three. men,
