The engineers' strike in the Welsh coal trade began on Thursday. Twen- ty-five thousand colliers aro affected. The weavers of tho Halifax cotton factory are on strike and work is practically suspended. The strike is caused by a cut in wages. THE FIRE RECORD. The old stone hotel at Minden was completely destroyed by fire on Sat- urday. Half a million dollars' worth of property was destroyed after mid- nght on Sunday by the Ere that started in Jones Bros.' big depart- mental store, Kansas City, Mo. At Port Hope on Sunday the eva- porating establishment of D. I. Ham - link was completely destroyed by fire. Loss probably $4,000, with no insurance. Hamill* had a large quantity of evaporated goods ready for shipment. The American Steel and Wire Com- pany at Chicago suffered a loss of $500,000 on Sunday by the burning of a portion of the Washburn & Moen wire establishment at Waukegan, Ill. Insurance $314,000.
