The Letters of Two Famous Authors.

.Tames Henderson, aged 78, ono of
Wolfe Island's oldest and most re-
spected residents, is dead.
Joseph Il. Farr of Loudon, who
was crushed between passing street
cars on Wednesday, died on Friday.
Brigadier -General Guy V. Henry,
U.S.A., late Governor of Porto Rico,
died on friday in New York, of
pneumonia, aged 00 years.
The body of Grant Allen, the Cana-
dian novelist, who died on Wednes-
day, was cremated on Friday at
Woking Cemetery, London.
Martin S. Smith, partner of Gen.
Russell A. Alger, in the extensive firm
of Alger, Smith ee Co., died at De-
troit on Saturday of kidney trouble.
Allan Mclvers was found dead in
the basement of the hose tower at
Iroquois on Saturday. He had been
drinking freely. His home was in Co-
bourg.
Professor Chas. Bohner, the well-
known teacher of music, and one of
the best known men of Toronto,
dropped dead from heart disease on
Friday evening. Prof. Bohner was
born in Germany some 65 years ago,
and received his education at Heidel-
berg.

Hon. F. R. Latchford went to To-
ronto on Friday, and took possessions
of his office at the Parliament Build-
ings.
The Liberals of South Wellington.
will select a candidate for the House
of Commons on Wednesday next at
Guelph.
Sir Charles Tupper and Mr. Berge-
ron, M.P., will speak in Ottawa in
a few days, after which Sir Charles
will go to British Columbia.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the Hon. W. S.
Fielding and the Hon. A. G. Blair
were in Toronto on Friday. They
left at 9.30 p.m. for the East.
Mr. John Sheridan, the live stock
exporter, has declined the invitation
from a deputation of East York Lib-
erals to become their standard bear-
er in the next Dominion election con-
test.
The Ontario Cabinet met on Thurs-
day afternoon and appointed the
three commissioners to look into the
public accounts of the province. They
are: Angus Kirkland, manager of the
Bank of Montreal; B. E. Walker, man-
ager of the Bank of Commerce, and
John Hoskin, Q.C., all of Toronto.

Rev. James S. Scott on Sunday
preached farewell sermons in the Hes-
peler Presbyterian Church here to
large and appreciative congregations.
His new charge is St. Andrew's
Church, Brantford, whence he goes at
once.

Grand Rapids, Mich., Oct. 30. —
Judge Newnham's father, sister and
twin daughters were all horn on
Queen Victoria's birthday. He recent-
ly sent a group photo of the family
to the Queen with a note of explana-
tion, and to -day received a letter of
acknowledgement direct from Balmo-
ral Castle, with further advice that
to him would be sent a photo of
Queen Victoria and representatives of
three successive generations.
To Start a New Revolution.
Caracas, Venezuela, Oct. 30.—Gen-
era). Hernandez has had a rupture
with the Government and left Cara-
cas early- yesterday morning for Ocu-
mare, to start a new revolution. He
has 2,000 men. All the Liberals are
supporting General Cipriano Castro.

Stuart Townshend, Marquis of Town-
shend, formerly Liberal member of
Parliament for Tamworth, whose an-
cestors distinguished themselves at.

A remarkable incident has come to
light in connection with a recent
drowning case at Rothesay. Opp of
the occupants of the boat, a boy eight
years of age, whose swimming roaster
had told hila in an emergency to lie
upon his back in the water, dill so.
Two little girls belonging to the party
held on to his legs and a smaller boy
rested his head on the youth's breast.
The four thus floated for sono, arniu-
lites, and were picked up by men who
had to row nearly a mile to their res -
cite. Three adults ---two sisters and a
