James Ryder of Cooper, Texas, who owns a race horse, put a boy named Fulkerson on the horse to ex- ercise the animal. The horse became unmanageable and threw the boy and broke bis neck. The boy's fa- ther, on seeing the lifeless body of usk for Minard's add take no other, his son, attacked Ryder with a dirk and stabbed him to death. The Federal Grand Jury at Buffalo found an indictment against Samuel Gallagher, formerly a student in the Royal Dental College at Toronto, for smuggling phenacetin and other drugs into the United States. , Galla- gher was only 19 years old when the crime was committed. He plead. - ed guilty and bis attorney made a plea for clemency. Gallagher was let off with a the of $75. James D. Wells, former vice-presi- dent of the Mutual Reserve Fund Life Association, was arrested at New York on Saturday. The charge is criminal libel. The complainant is President Frederick Burnham of the Mutual Reserve, and he asks' $150,- 000 damages for the alleged libel. Mr. Wells outspokenly made serious charges about the management. Nine of the leading soap manufac- turers of the Dominion met in To- ronto on Saturday. No decision was arrived at, but they talked combine, it is said. It is said that the Canadian furni- ture urniture manufacturers are on the eve of forming a mammoth trust to con- trol the whole furniture trade of Canada. For the past two days the 42 members of the Canadian 'furni- ture Manufacturers' Association have been in Toronto, it is asserted, dis- cussing the plans of forming a trust. The Monongahela River Coal and Coke Company is a. fact and the many coal concerns which have done busi- ness ussness in the Pittsburg district for years, ceased to exist on Saturday. Beginning on Monday the firms will be merged into one great combine, and all business will be transacted with the Monongahela River Coal & Coke Company. The capital stock is $40,000,000. PURELY PERSONAL. Mr, George Bertram, M.P., who re- cently underwent an operation at New York, is rapidly improving. Mr. Bertram will be home again in To- ronto within ten days' time. S. T. The Spanish Cabinet has resigned.
