Washing the hands in a little must-

Aigrettes for Women's Trate.
A British consul in Venezuela has
made a most elaborate report to his
government of the destruction of birds
for the supply of aigrettes for wom-
en's hats. He estimates that the num-
ber of birds killed in 1608 for this pur-
pose was 1,535, 738. No less than 870
birds have to be killed to produce two
and a quarter pounds of the smaller
feathers. "It is to be feared," adds
the consul, "that this waste will
within an appreciable time exhaust
the supply."

Carp Is Wonderfully Made.
People marvel at the mechanism of
the human body, with. its 492 bones
and 60 arteries. But man is simple in
this respect compared with carp.
That remarkable fish moves no fewer
than 4,386 bones and muscles every
time it breathes. It has 4'320 veins, to
lay nothing of its 99 muscles.

Facilities the Time is Fast Approaching
when England Wil; be Able to De-
pend on Her Colonies for Foot,.
Sits. J. Moutgomeey Smith has con-
tributed an article to the Cold Story
age ,Magazine which; goes to demon-
strate that the Brtish Empire is year
by year approaching that much to be
desired state which will make her
independent of the rest of the world
in regard to food supplies. He says:
o much has been written and said
about the difficulties and dangers of
the food supplies of Great Britain,
that it is not difficult for any one who
has studied the food question enough
to readily understand what au impor-
tant part scientific modern mechanical
refrigeration must play for inland
transit, storage and oversee trans-
portation, since its rticeessful conauler-
ei all application is now at accomp-
lished fact. The dangers of a food
famine in England in case of war,
have always been and are atilt to a
terser degree, a matter of great mom-
eut, owing to the feet that she has
began obliged to draw her food sup-
plies from all countries iu the world.
Tree following table shows the val-
es of some twelve food products
imported by Great Britain for the
years ended, December 31, 1696 and
159:, respectively':
Food's Effect on Temper.
Some authorities hold the idea'• that
a child's disposition is largely gov-
erned by his diet, citing the gentle-
ness of the rice -eating races against
the quarreling of heat -eating child-
ren in proof.
Reduced Freight Rates,
The French authorities have decided

in freight rates on railways for all

ries to, the exhibition next year.

England's • Enormous Marif.et,
These figures of the values of the
innperts of twelve classes of food pro -
duets show the eeeistenee of a market
,'
of enormous capacity, at4
a besideo which
' 11 .
sell otllaer markets in the world
devintlle into insignificance. If we
examine the above figures, it will
be seen that about .alt10,000,000 of geek
foots products consist of such as must
and can only be plae'ed on the English
markets by the assistance of cold stor-
age accommodation, especially if
shipped from distant parts of the
world. It has long bcea recognized
that it is impossible for Great Britain
to produee these enormous supplies,
absolutely necessary to feed her peo-
ple, while at the same time it has
become apparent to the advocates of
Imperial Federation that with the
improved oversee. faeilities from the
various parts of the Fritish Empire,
it, would be possible to direct trade in
a few years, so that the great undevel-
oped wheat lands of Canada and other
parts of the Empire could supply
nearly. if not all her breadstuffs,
while for beef anti mutton, Australia
and New Zealand, it is estimated,
will alone soon be able to supply the
British markets.
Greatest Buyer of Food.
When we stop to consider that Eng-
land is the greatest buyer of food pro-
ducts the world has ever known, and
that, either in one part or another of
the British Empire, such food pro-
ducts can be produced in enormous
quantities equal to the demands, if
they can be successfully carried to
arrive in good condition, is it at all
strange that rapid progress should
be made in all such methods, epecially
when in most cases it means national
prosperity for the various parts of the
Empire? This is what makes cold
storage a vital question in Great
Britain to -day, while in many other
colonies the various Governments
offer the most liberal support, and
in Canada it may be said to be a po-
litical issue, so thoroughly has it be-
come apparent that modern and cold
storage is absolutely necessary, both
on land and sea, if food products are
to be placed on foreign markets.
In Africa the Government has extend-
ed its support to a new extensive
system of cold stores, while each few
months can be seen new subsidies
given to steamships trading to vari-
ous parts of the Empire conditionally
upon fitting with modern mechanical
refrigeratioa for carrying fresh food
supplies in larger quantities.
Some fifteen years ago Australasia
sent no meat to England, while the
United States sent about 25,000 ton;
in 1898 the United States sent 75,000
toes, while Australasia sent 83,000
tons. Australia could a few years ago
ship no dairy produce to England, but
now she sends much more than the
United States, and for which she re-
ceives more per pound, while in near-
ly every part of the Empire, •ill all
parts of the world the same tenden-
cies are at work.
Canada's Capabilities.
The area of Canada is about that of
the United States, while her com-
parative capabilities of expansion in
dairy and other food products for ex-
port are much greater, as is evidenc-
ed, since the establishment with Gov-
ernnxent assistance of regular cold
storage accommodation for inland,
terminal and steamship services. Be-
ginning in 1892, New Zealand, with
an export of 500 tons of meat, as
quickly as it was shown that mechan-
ical refrigeration was a commercial
eneeess for long sea voyages, has in,
creased her =meal export to England
in twelve years to no less than 65,000
tons, while in dairy products she is
rapidly coining to the front, as the
12,000 mile voyage, owing to the con-
stantly improving methods for ocean
transportation, is getting less and
less each year. Tasmanian apples,
Australian butter, rabbits, fruit and
poultry, New Zealand cheese, etc„
all arrive in good condition on the
English market.
Australia, with a population of
only 4,500,000 people to feed, carries
129,000,000 sheep, cattle and swine,
with an area almost equal to the
United States, so that when we find
that there are 114 vessels engaged in
the Australasian trade fitted with
meehituical refrigeration, and with
a carrying capacity of 7,842,150 car-
casses, it is easy to sea what an im-
portant factor cold storage is, when
all this was impossible and unheard of
fifteen years ago.
No Fear of Famine.
The great tendeucy, not only of the
English, but all other peoples, is to
buy more and more of 'their food sup-
ply in fresh foods; in fact, nearly all
the increase each year is towards
fresh foods, and now that distance
and climate ere tlo longer difficul-
ties in lkeepiug fresh Toed products
ire flap eondition, considering the ex-
tent and variety of produeitve area in
the Empire, it would seem possible
that in a few years the British Eltx-
pire may be able to feed itself, while
with such a supply grown on British
soil and carried in British ships,
when refrigerating appliances are per-
feeted, if she retains the lnasterhood
of the ocean, there need be on fear
Of a famine.
SMOKELESS POWDER.
Firing Saul to Do More Terrifying to
.11eu and Horxex..
In the British array the four -legged
recrults are draeon, up in a ming round
an iustruetor who fires a pistol.
Some take the flash and report very
quietly, and these are very soon pass-
ed on to severer trials, while the
others have lesson after lesson until
they are quite convinced that there is
xto dauger to thein, and before long
yon might fere a seven -pounder with-
in a yard of them, and they world
hardly look around. After this they
aro taught to face fire—that is to say,
to gallop fearlessly up to a line ar!
squaro of infantry blazing assay with
their rifles, and to charge batteries of
quick -firing guns. Of course, only
blank cartridges aro wised, and so to a
trained horse going lute battle for
the first time there is no difference
between the harmless thunder of man-
oeuvers and the death -dealing storm
which sweeps over the battlefield.
Tim poor brute only lent= what the
difference really is by bitter experi-
ence.
When smokeless powder dame into
general use it was found that in many
eases horses which would face the
smoke of guns using black powder
without flashing, flinched and shied
at the crash and roar unaccompanied
by smoke Continental opinion ' is
somewhat divided es to the moral
effect of smokless powder on men and
horses, but the general conclusion
seems to be that in daylight it is not
more terrifying than black powder,
although some hold. that to see men
and horses struck down by an invisi-
ble agency must necessarily be so.
But it is generally agreed that the
use of smokeless powder at night has
a much more disturbing effect than
that of the old powder, because the
flashes of the guns, 'unobscured by
smoke, are a great deal more vivid.
The fear thus inspired can, however,
be overcome by training, but there is
another fear which must, in the nat-
ure of the case; be felt for the first
time on the battlefield, and that is
the often uncontrollable terror produc-
ed both in men and horses by the
whistling of bullets and the screaming
and banging of shells. Some authori-
ties have, indeed, said that since the
introduction of smokeless powder and
the great increase in the range and
accuracy of weapons, it would be im-
possible to keep cavalry in hand un-
der the fere of modern artillery, but
this is probably an exaggeration.--
Pearson's Magazine.
Driving in Russia.
In Russia no one drives without
having a thin cord with a running
noose around the neck of his horse.
When the animal bolts the cord is
pulled, and the horse stops as soon
as it feels the pressure on the wind-
pipe.
