Death of Postmaster Porte, Mr, William Porte, postmaster of I -wan for the past thirty-eight years, died tit his residence et Mali -past six o'clock Tnt'sday morning at the age of 70 years. The deceased was one of tate best known mien in that distr'iet, having been the eldest son of .lames Parte, who came to this country from Ire- land in 1837, and settled where Lucan village now stands, thus being the original settles' on the village site. \Val. Portes father occupied int ny prominent positions in Lucan, and served for many year's as Township Clerk. The deceased spent eleven 1years of his life in 13elwille, and in b5ta returned to Lucan, then called Marystown, and succeeded his father as Township Clerk. HQ hes been postmaster since 1858, but during the past few years the office has been till- ed by lir. Frear. Porte, his eldest son. The deceased was a member of Lucan Town Council for several years, and has always taken the most active in- terest in the affairs of the village and township. His wife died about three months ago, after a long and painful illness. There are six ellildren, two sons and four daughters. In politics Mr. Porte was a. staunch Conservative, and in religion an ardent member" of the Church of England. lie was a chaster member of 'Irving Lodge, No,151, A.F. Charles Murphy Attacked a Fellow -Con- vict in the Kingston Peuiteatiary, Which Lad to General Bow. Kingston, Ont., Sept, 19..—It 'was learned yesterday that a disgraceful fight took place between convicts in the Kingston penitentiary Friday af- ternoon. Charles Murphy, alias John Troy, murderer of Angus McLeod, Napanee, attacked a fellow-conviet named William Phillips, sentenced from Kingston Keepers separated them. John Doe, convicted at Moue ton, N.13., for complicity in the mur- der of Policeman Steadman, inform- ed the guards that Troy would not be so troublesome were it not for the fact that he was being backed up by Charles Hughbanks, a huge negro. The last named overheard. Doe's re- marks, and challenged hiss to fight. They repaired to an unfrequented part of the prison yard, where they had it out. Doe got the better of the negro, and was pummelling hien on the ground when guards separat- ed theta. Phillips interfered on Doe's behalf, and was attacked by Elsner Bidell, another Kingston convict, and badly punished. An Indian named Degair assisted in punishing Phil- lip's. The efficers had great difficulty in separating the men and restoring quiet. Only a few days ago the cells were searched, and a long bladed knife was found in that Occupied by the negro, Iltighbanks, Mackie lines tt, ('xttourg, Robert Mackie, serving a 10 -year teras,. in Kingston penitentiary for complicity in the Napanee hunk rob- bery, will be taken to t'ohourg at 9 o'clock to -day, to give evidence in the Penton trial. The gunboat sighted the steamer during the night of Sept. 1.3. about 80 miles off the north coast of the island of Luzon, and suspected that she was a fili- buster. Ytred Three Shots. The I'auapango fired three shots, which the Yuen Sang disregarded Un- til the third shell exploded near her. $he then stopped. and the command- er of the gunboat hoarded the Yuen Sang, found he had utade a mistake; and apologized. A Little ;Sit $resp, An American gunboat, nature un.- known. followed the British steamer Mantle, bound from Manila to Hong>ong. The warship sighted the steamer in Subig Bay during the night of Sept. 16. and whist led sig- nals to stop. The signals were dis- regarded, and the gunboat ran along- side the Ditunte, getting so close that her guns tore away the Diatnte's out - rigging. Her passengers thrownwore into a panic. The gunboat, on learn- ing the identity of the steamer, sheer- ed off. . His Life Was Saved. Mr. J. E. Sept. 19.—Adfniral Frederick Bedford, Commander -in - Chief of the British North America and West Indies squadron, which, with the exception of the flagship. the Crescent, is now here, arrived here yesterday afternoon. The Ad- miral, who is accompanied by Lady Bedford and his private secretary, will spend to -day in Montreal, and at night will proceed to Niagarit Falls and rejoin the squadron here towards the end of the week. The wear vessels Talbot, Pearl, Psyche and Quail arrived in Montreal at 4 &clock in the afternoon. Admiral Sir Frederick Bedford has transferred his flag to the Talbot for the visit to Montreal. Hamilton, Sept. 19.-0 wen Me- Ilroy, the man who was roughly used at the G.T.R. depot last week, was reported dying at the General HosIital yesterday afternoon, on, and Magistrate Jeffs went there and took his deposition. Immediately after- wards warrants were issued for the arrest of Robert Gray, station mas- ter, and John Iiamtnil, yardmaster, on a charge of aggravated assault. J. V. Teetzel was engaged as coun- sel, but was unable to get them ad- mitted to bail. Last evening the pri- soners were removed to the jail. Molloy ter Teuton's Defence. Toronto, Sept. 191—Deputy Attor- ney -General Cartwright was seen yes- terday in regard to the statement that the Government had not kept its promise to pay the costs of Pon - ton's defence. He said . that he thought there had been a little mis- understanding in the matter, for he understood that the balance of the money had been placed in the hands of the sheriff of the county. At any rate the promise made by Premier Hardy would be fully carried out. Serious Blaze at .York. York, Haldimand County, . Ont., Sept. 19.—Early Saturday morning fire • broke out in the Masonic build- ing and destroyed it, with all its con- tents, also the household goods of William Oxford, who lived down- stairs., Then it spread to the two adjoining buildings, James Law- rence's Hotel on one side and - the store and dwelling owned and occu pied' by S. Toronto, Sept. 19.—One of the oldest veterans of the Rebellion of 1837, Lieut: -Col, William Thompson, passed away last night at the family home here. He was a most remark- able personage, and had witnessed the rise of Toronto from a village. Although at the advanced age of 83 ru years,he was able to regu- lar his S lar daily walk, until ten clays ago. Two of his sons are F. H. Thomp- son and E. A. Thompson, who have won fame as oarsmen. Died in the Dentist's Chair. Hamilton, Sept. 19.—There. wvas another unfortunate death in the dental office of Dr. Charles Thontp- ton yesterday. Mrs. Walter, Jennings died while under the influence of chloroform and having teeth extract- ed.
