Smith's Falls, Sept. 1�. ---Mrs. Aisne
Blake, Wife Of Thomas Blake of this
town, was found dead in an upper
room of their house yesterday- morn-
ing,, under circumstances that requir-
ed investigation. Tire Chief of Police
was notified, and took charge sof the
body, pending the arrival of Coroner'
McCallum, who at once took steps to
bold an inquest.
.An adjournment was made until
evening to enable the medical wit-
nesses to hold a post-mortein a xanf-
ination. In the evening a further ad-
journment until 'Wednesday at 1 g.
m. was utade, owing to the absence
of a eparterial witness.
The body. when discovered, was in
nearly a. nude state. and was cover-
ed. with bruises and abrasions front.

cent. It appears that Blake and his
wife, together with a man named
Hy. McGrath. were drinking together
on 'Saturday evening, and Blake, be-
coating jealous of McGrath,, heat his
wife with a stick:. McGrath has not
been arrested yet. but search is be-
ing made for hint. Blake, on being
$shed to go to work on Monday
morning. solid he cauls not. as his
wife was dead- He also said she died
at 9 o'clock Saturday night: that she
was tuisbehaving. and that he had
thrashed her with a. stick:. He was
placed under arrest.
His first wife (lied meter similar
circumstances 25 years ago. lle is
b ub,ct to le and to e s el i p+, u d ha,
a 'violent temper. 1115 wife frequent-
ly showed marks of viuloneee het,tis
both frequently indelged. this at-
tracted little attention.
She had several times of late ap-
plied to the authorities to restrain
her hwteand, saying that he would
murder her. but nothing was clone
until too late.

Toronto. Sept. 19. -• The ceremo-
nies in connection with the formal
opening of the new city buildings
commenced at :non yesterday. when
the Governor -Genera's hotly (:cards'
Band ascended the platforms erected
en the lawn 00 the queen street
front of the buildingand played at
number of national and patriotic
airs. They held the fort until 2.80 .
p.111., when they were sueeeeded by
the hand of the 4th siiglvatn.h rs,
who in torr- were relieved at 5
o'clock by the band of the loyal
Grenadiers. ard at 7.30 the hand of
the Queen's Own began and contin-
ued playing until 10 p.m., at which
hour the outdoor programme was
brought to a conclusion. The mayor
bad so arranged that the citizens will
be given ten hunrs of eontinuuus
music by brass bands as a fitting ac-
companiment to the great event.
Opened. 'With Golden Rey.
At 2.1.5 the mayor and members of
the City Council assembled, entering
by the James street entrance. They
then proceeded to the maul entrance
of the building, where they were
photographed. They were ten join-
ed by the ex -members of Council and
the entire group were photographed.
The mayor then advanced to the
main entrance and, producing a gold-
en key, unlocked the door, and en-
tered the building. followed by the
members and ex-netahers of Council.
The centre of the main lobby at the
foot of the grand staircase had been
roped off, and seats provided. as-
cending to the first landing the
mayor was accompanied by Rev.
Principal Caren and Rev. Prof. Clark.
A passage of scripture was read by
Principal Caven, and Prof. Clark led
in prayer.
The ?layor's _Address.
His Worship Mayor Shaw then de-
livered an address, giving a histori-
cal sketch of the' -new building. and
the causes which led to its erection.
The total expenditure to date on the
building was $2,092,682.57. When
the mayor finished his speech the
band struck up "God Save the
Queen."
In the evening a high-class concert
was given by these well-known ar-
tists: Miss Beverley Robinson, Miss
H. Edythe Hill, Mr. Harold Jarvis,
Miss Ada Hart, and instrumental se-
lections by lIrs. Harold Jarvis and
lir. Frank Smith of Chicago.

representatives as sociable as could be,
but McGillivray and Stephen think
with alittle practice that theBiddulpb-
ers would be nearlx-asgood dancers as
themselves. Shoufd these three town-
ships meet again on such. all occasion it
is the reporter's sincerest wish that
the giris will not return home singing
"Where was my boy to -nights" --On
the 12th inst., a happpyail'ltil took place
here, when Mr. Ridley Watson and
Miss Lottie Johnston were united in •
the holy bonds of matrimony. -Mr.
Wes Berr^ has returned to Brinsley af-
ter spending some time on a wedding
tour. I[e looks as if he enjoyed leis
trip. -The League is beginning again
at Mare's Hills church. No doubt
their work will be prosperous. -Mr.
Willis Shouldice succeeded in getting

George Bertram, M.P., Operated On.
Toronto, Sept. 19. -Mr. John H.
Bertram received a telegram from
New York last night stating that
his father, Mr. George Bertram, M.
P., bad undergone an operation, and
was resting easily. The operation
was performed by Dr. Helmuth, the
eminent New York surgeon, and was
entirely successful. The veins in Mr.
Bertram's left arm had become swol-
len and tangled, which caused rheu-
matism •n the arm
? and shoulder. It
is likely that Mr. Bertram will he
able to return to his home in a few
weeks.

Weather fine and beautiful. -The
farmer's in this vicinity are almost
done seeding; some are putting in a
number of acres, while others are
thinking about going into mixed farm-
ing. -Mr. and airs. Rau and family, of
Milverton, were the guests of air. and
Mrs. Greb, of the Huron House, for the
past week. -Mr. D. L. Williams is re-
covering from his long and serious ill-
ness. -lir. Mortin, superintendent of
Agencies for Dominion Life Assurance
Company ; paid our town a fiving visit
last Friday in the interest of the com-
pany. -The Zurich Flax Company
have disposed of the entire stock of
Sax at a very unreasonable figure.
They think flax growing and manu-
facturing is a thing of the past. -The
Zurich Public School and grounds have
been somewhat renovated which great-
ly adds to their appearance. -The Gos-
pel Band is still in town and the at-
tendance is very good ---A number
from town and vicinity took in Toron-
to exposition last week and it is ex-
pected a. greater number will attend
the Western Fair this week. -Mr. Mil-
ton Buchanan left for Toronto Satur-
day to resume his studies in the Uni-
versity. He is now on his third year.
The Zurich Fair seems to be a promis-
ing success as there never was a larger
ntunber of members than this year.
The concert in the evening of the sec-
ond day of the fair, to be given under
the auspices of the Zurich Public
School, will, it is hoped, be a• success
both financially and every other way.
-Fire broke out in the fruit evapora-
tor owned by Merner Bros., and total-
ly destroyed it, together with a store-
house and about 3,000 pounds of dried
apples. Fortunately all hands escaped.
Mr. Gotleib Merner was somewhat
burned.
DEATn3 OF HENRY REICHERT.-The
cold hand of death has again entered
our midst and taken away another of
the old land -marks of Hay, in the per-
son of Mr. Henry Reichert, Sr., of this
place. He departed this life at the
good old age of 84. He leaves a wife
and a large family of grown up sons

this year is not as heavy as that of
last year, thus the prices will likely

last in behalf of the superannuation
fund. He handled the question very
ably, the subscription amounting to
over 330 . -The Rev. Mr. Husser, of
Crediton, will take charge of the ser-
vices here next Sunday, while on the
following Tuesday the Epworth
League intend giving a Harvest Home
supper. A good time is expected. -
On Monday evening last the Sr. Leag ue

enjoyed a very pleasant evening's
