arrival here yesterday morning Detective
Greer, of the Ontaarie Detective Depart-
ment, was at once taken to the jail and
confronted with the prisoners, whom he
at once itlentifled as ]'aro and holden.

philosophically. They sold little. in facn
during the whole of their incarceration
they have maintained a discreet silence,

The men will be taken to Toronto by

Card in a Pocket Bore the Name "Isaac
Warner, Swansea, Ont."
Niagara Falls, N.V., July 5. -Tho
body of a hell -dressed ]can, apparently
about 355 years old, was found in the
river above the Falls yesterday afternoon.
In ono of his pockets was found a card
bearing the name "Isaac Warner, Swan-
sea, Ont." The coroner is investigating.
Toronto, July 5. -The name Isaiah
Warner appears in the directory as belong-
ing to Swansea. His occupation is given
as manager of tho "Swansea swinery."
Nelson Shaver Drowned Himself.
Thorold, Ont., July 5. -The body of
Nelson Shaver, well-known throughout
this district, was taken out of the new
canal, between lock 24 and the Niagara
Central Railway swing bridge here, Mon-
day night, with every evidence of suicide.
The deceased had evidently loft the house
and gong to the barn, where ho secured
a dog chain and a weight of 10 or 12
pounds, such as is used to tie horses. He
had attached these to his neck and
jumped into the canal. Ho had only one
arm. An inquest was held here yesterday
afternoon by Coroner Dr. Lemon, and
the jury brought in a verdict of tempor-
ary insanity and suicide.
A Crazy lIan ,With a Gun.
Windsor, Ont., July 5. -Malcolm Mo
Alpine walked into the hotel of his
cousin, Peter McAlpine, at Glencoe.
armed with a rifle, and coolly informed
the proprietor that he intended boring a
holo in him. The hotel man escaped to
his room upstairs and all night Mc-
Alpine waited near the door for his
appearance, with the rifle still in readi-
ness. He threatened to shoot anyone at-
tempting to arrest him. The local
officers wouldn't tackle the job, but a
detective cane from London and looked
him up. He is insane.
Sneath Is Very Werk.
London, Ont.July 5. -John Sneath,
the ex-G.T.R. b,aggageman, who recent-
ly attempted to cut his throat, now lies
in a very low condition at the county
jail. Since his arrest Sneath has refused
to eat, pausing him to become so weak
that he is unable to walk. He is never
left by himself, for fear that he will
again attempt his life. If Sneath recovers
he will be transferredto the asylum.
Kingston Postof lee Enquiry.
Kingston, Ont., July 5. -The postoffice
enquiry, under Judge Morgan, was
postponed, for general convenience, until
Thursday. E. F. B. Johnston, Q.O.,
Toronto, and Macdonald & Farrell have
been engaged by Deputy Postmaster Ren-
ton and Clerk Cochrane, and A. B.
Cunningham will represent Allen
Chamberlain.
Hanged Himself With Twiner
-Listowel, Ont., July 5. -Nelson Dixon,
sixty years of age, committed suicide by
hanging himself with binder twine to a
beam in the barn bank of the house last
night. Mr•Dixon bad been a resident of
.Listowel for twenty years. A wife and
large family are left. Despondency is sup-
posed to have been tho cause of the aot.

Brussels,. July .5. -In the Chamber of
Deputies yesterday, M. Van Denpeere-
boom., at the opening of the session, re-
iterated the Government's strong desire

ernment considers there is ground for
entertaining the counter -electoral pro-
posals suggested by various members,.

prepared to consider the necessary steps
to accomplish the desired understanding."
M. Van Der Veldt, Socialist, on behalf
of the two parties of Leftists, supported
the Ministerial proposal, which, he de-
clared, was equivalent to the withdrawal
of the Government scheme, The country,
he contrnned, has thus achieved a signal
victory, and is convinced that the only
solution of the existing party differences
is an appeal to the country, either
through an early election, a dissolution,
or a referendum. In conclusion, M. Van
Der Veldt declared the parties et the
Left Would remain united in order to
catebat any attempt of the Government
to resume offensive tactics, and to pre-
vent any fresh party coup.

The Hague Arbitration Committee
Modifies Russian Proposals.
The Hague, July 5. -At a meeting
yesterday afternoon of the arbitration
committee the question whether arbitra-
tion should be obligatory or optional
was raised, and drew .a categorical de-
claration from the Gerinan delegate, to
the offeot that he bad received formal in-
structions not to accept the principle of
obligatory arbitration, otherwise than by
special conventions.
In view of this statement article 10 of
the Russian proposal was struok out and
replaced by a provision. doelarin arbi-
tration should be optional except in the
Baso of conventions between the powers.
All the delegates adhered to this, M.
Bourgeois, head of the French delega-
tion, declaring he aocepted it only as a
compromise.

London, July 5. -Mr. Joseph Choate,
the American ambassador, and Mrs.
Choate celebrated the fourthwith recep-
tions, both at the United States Embassy
and at their residence. Each of the build

enoe here yesterday of the U. S. training
ship Monongahela was theoccasion for
an interesting ceremony in the harbor at
noon. All the British warships were
decorated with flags, and the American

Lucan: On June 1st Detective Ward
was fined $30 for using profane lang-
uage while making an arrest atLucan.
Reeve Braitwaite WAS the complainant.
Mr. Ward appealed the case, which
will be heard before a judge at the sit-
tings on Dec. 12th, On Saturday De-
tective 'Ward laid an information
charging Braitwaite with having been
in a licensed hotel in the village of Lu -
can on the morning of the first day of
June at 2 o'clock, and buying liquor
and drinking the sabre.
