"It was written in Hebrew and Greek and Latin." It was for all the world, and the King of the Jews shall yet be seen to be King of lianas and Lord' of Lords (Rev, xvii, 14; six, 10). Let Ile - brew stand for religion, Greek for wis- dom. and Latin for Rome) for power, owl we have rho great truth thatapart, t nt fro p tbe ling of the Jews, in His death and resurrection, there is no true religion or wisdom or power. Salvation is of the Jews, aucl Christ is the wisdom and power of Gad (John iv, 22; I Cor. i, 24). 21, 2e, —What I have written I base written." Thus said Pilate to the chief priests when they urged him to alter the title on the cross. As Herod and Pilate and the Jews and Judas and the devil only performed, all unintentionally and igno- rantly, that whieb the hand and counsel of God had determinedbefore to ho done (Acts iv, 2>a), we may see in Pilate's firne ness in tbis matter an assurance that "Every purpose of the Lord shall be per- formed" (Jer. 11, 2a; Iso. xiv, .14). 23. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments azzd made four parts, to every soldier a part." Tbese soldiers haat no voice or will in the matter; they must obey orders. For these Jesus prayed, saying, "Father, for give them, for they know not wlxaxt they do" (Luke xxiii, 34). It seems incredibly awful that literal nails should, be driven through the hands and feet of tho Lord Jesus! But whet shall wo say of the love that could thus pray for those who did it? 24. "They parted My raiment among them and for My vesture they did cast lots." For the coat that was without seamthey cast lots, and thus was literally fulfilled Ps. xxii, 18, Tho soldiers, clothed with His clothing because of His death, help us to remember that all be- lievers are clothed with the garments of salvation, the reboot righteousness, by Rae death and resurrection (Isa. lei, 10; II Cor. v, 21). The five parts of His cloth- ing suggest the abundance of the provi- sion He bas made for us, "exceeding abundant" (I Tim. i, 14; Eph. Hi, 20). 25. "Now there stood by the erose of Jesus His mother." By comparing Math. savii, 56, and Mark xv, 40, with this verse we conclude that His mother's sister was Salome; wife of Zebedee, mother of James and John. So there were at least four women who were suffering with Him as they watched His sufferings. How could they stand it? How could His mother bear it? Was this a part of the piercing of her heart of which Simeon bad spoken in Luke fit 85?` 26. "Woman, behold thy son]" This said Jesus to Mary as He saw her and the disciple whom 110 loved standing by. The three sayings before the three hours' darkness were . "Fatherforgive them," "Today shalt thou be with Ale in para- dise" and this to His mother and John. They tell us of the forgiveness of sins or present salvation, of the glory that awaits es and of provision for all our need while we sojourn here. He who spared not Hia own Son, but delivered Him up for us all —how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 27. "Then saith He to the disciple, Be- hold thy mother. And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home." What an honor conferred upon John! And thus Mary has a home with a loving heart to care for her. But why not let one of His brothers, her own clan - drew, care for her? We will some day know this also if it is best that we should. Meanwhile we rest in the assurance that He does nothing without a cause. 28. "After this Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst." This was after the three hours' darkness, after all the mocking and jeer- ing of His cruel enemies. It was all nearly over now, but Ps. lxia, 21, re- mained to be fulfilled. The previous verse in that psalm says that reproach had broken His heart, that those to take pity and comforters He found none. 29. "They filled a sponge with vinegar and put it upon hyssop, and put it to His mouth." How very fully and liberally every word of Scripture concerning His humiliation was fel lineal So may we ex- pect all concerning His second conting and Hia glory and His kingdom to be as liter- ally fulfilled. Let us consider every item of His sufferings for.us until we are hu- miliated and wholly devoted to Hini. Let us consider every item of the glory to be revealed and our partnership with Him in it until we can make the words of Rom. viii; 18, our very own. May wo cry in very deed, "My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God" (Ps. slii, 2; lysis, 1). 80. "When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, Be said, It is finished, and He bowed His head anda up vothe g ghost." . His eery last words seem to have been "Father, into Thy hands I coin - mend hty spirit" (Luke xxiii, 46; Ps: xxxi, 5). Luke stays that He cried this with a loud voice, so that Re died in l.iI strength. He suffered the full time ap- pointed Hint, and the blood and water from His side would seem to indicate the broken heart (John xix, 84).
