The Earl of Minto wits educated at
Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge,
graduating as a B.A. In 1806, His
sorvloos to Canada ware given in the
capacity of ohief of the staff in the
Northwest rebellion of 1885, for which he
received mention in the despatches .t►nd n
medal. He has been under Sire, having
boon wounded in tho Egyptian campaign
at 1882. After his recovery he won fame
as commander of the Mounted Infantry
in Canoe, being mentioned In despatches,
given a modal and ranked as fourth-class.

besides numerous lessor lights in polities
and the army.

Minto, Gilbert Elliot, first earl of, an
English statesman, born April 23, 1731.
Ho was the elderh

baronet, Sir Gilbert Elliot of Roxburgh -
shire, Scotland, and entered the House
of Commons in 1774 as a Liberal Whig.
He was ambassador at Copenhagen from
1788 to 1704, and 'was sent as viceroy to
Corsica during the English ooeupation
of that island in the earlier years of tho
war with the Frenob republic. On his
return to England he was raised to the
peerage (Oot. 10, 1797), as Baron Minto.
In 1799 he was appointed ambassador at
Vienna. On resuming Ms seat in the
House of Lords he urged the union of
Ireland with England, and subsequently
opposed the emancipation of the Irish
Catholics. In 1808.7 ho was president of
the Board of Control for Indian affairs,
and he was made Governor-General of

made Viscount Meigund, the Earl of

His son, Gilbert Elliot Murray Kynyn-
mound, second earl, born Nov. 16, 1752,
was Minister to Berlin in 1823, First
Lcrd of the Admiralty 1885-41, Lord
Privy Seal in the administration of Lord
John Russel (his son -in -lave), 1846-59,
and in 1847 was sent on a special mission
to the Italian courts for the purpose of
promoting Liberal reforms. He died July
81, 1889.
Ho Was a Sportsman.
Earl Minto, 25 years ago, as Lord
Meigund, was recognized as one of the
most brilliant cross-country riders in
England, and owned many first•olass
steepleohasors. His colors were white,
blue sleeves and cap, which; he very
often bore to victory, his great cantons -
Emery And competitor being Mr. J. M.
renowned beauty, whose father was
equery to H.R,13, the Prince of Wales in
his Canadian tour in 1860. Lady i'Itnto
is still one of the best lady skaters in
England, a 'recreation which she pm -

pleasant looking man, rather under the
average height, He is an cscellont horse-
man, having the reputation of being the
best gentleman rider in England.
While be was in Canada in 1885 he
WAS chief of the st;sif 3n tho Northwest
rebellion. IIo held no appointment in
the Canadian militia, but acted as the
confidential aide of General 'Middleton,
of whom he was a warm personal friend.
At Clark's Crossing A,tiddloton's
column was divided, and Lard MIalgand
was put in charge of the division that
crossed the riser and oecupled the west
bank. As a result of this the latter
division was not present at the battle of
Flat Creek. but rejoined rho swain
column isniaedlataly at its conclusion,
Lord Meltsund was at 011es ileepatchml

deapata'tar.. the nature of which has

Daughter of the Earl and Countess of

came too late, for the fort had fallen

The prizes in this meta are awarded
to the competitors whose respective
snores in the Daily Graphic, Alexandra,
Graphic and Daily Telegraph make up
the largest aggregate. First prize, Chal-
lenge Cup, value 2250 and 220, ono of
£15, ono of £10, eight of 25, ten of £3,
eighty of 2:3.
Sergt. Simpson, 10th Batt., secured
first place in the Barlow, awarded to the
cornpetitor malting the highest aggregate
score in the Alexander Martin,
Armourers and Thorburn. The prize is a
cup worth £25.
In the same match Lieut. Gilchrist,
1st B.F.A., won 160 shillings, Capt.
Hutoheson, 43rd Batt., 60 shillings, and
Sergt. Armstrong, 10th Batt., 40 shill-
ings. Col.•Setgt. Blair, 27th Batt., and
Lieut. Ross, 13th Batt., each won 20
shillings.
Monday's 'Winnings.
At Bisley yesterday .Armstrong and
Ross in the Corporation Prize, each won
240, and Sirnpson, Robertson and Gil-
christ won 25 each.
DEATH WAS INSTANTANEOUS.
Struck by <Grand Trunk Express and
Thrown Against a Fence.
Thamesville, Ont., July 26.-A terrible
fatality occurred at 9.20 yesterday, by
which a young man by the name of
Burr, living about four miles from this
place, was instantly killed. He was
standing close to the G.T.R. track,
apparently watching a west -bound
freight, when the G.T.E. express, run-
ning at a high rate of speed came down
upon him. Ho must not .have been
aware of its approaoh, as he never moved.
The first ooaah struck him on the left
side of his fano. tearing his head in two
and scattering his brains on the fence
and ground. His body was thrown
against the fence and death . was instan•
taneous. The coroner has ordered an
inquest to be field and has notified bis
parents.
Farmer Commits Suicide.
Tottenham, Ont., July 26. -James
Agnew, au unmarried man, aged 36
years, who recently bought a Sino farm
in Albion`'I'ownship, ooininitted suicide
on Saturday. Deceased went about trying
to get aeons one to ho]p hire cut his
grain. On his way back he called at his
mother's and she made him a oup of tea.
Ho started for home. .A few hours after-
wards a younger brother found him
hanging in an outbuilding 'dead.

friends hope for a complete recovery.

of Galt, died Wednesday from the
effects of an operation.
Monday evening, near. Carew's saw
mill, Lindsay, an employe named Cronk
lost his life while bathing.
Nelson ring, of Carleton:Place, gen-
erally supposed to bo implicated in the
Blair poisoning case, was found hang-
ing to a tree on the outskirts of the
town Tuesday.
