Joan of Arc heard `voices; androde

was. .the .purely human cry of a heart
—but she had something that know-

its purpose,clarified her vision, lifted
her out of `herself, led her forth to
start a movement which`"" -i omises to
circle the whole. wide world.
In the spring • of 1907 Anna Jarvis
lost her mother. The two had been

could bear. The : longing for '`the
touch of a vanished hand and the
mired of :a voice that is still" made
her -realize the Meaning of mother-
hood—the tenderness, the caretaking,
the:roacrifice and the splendor.
It awoke a passionate desire' te, seee

but all mothers, from the highest in
the land to the lowest—living =th-

of.
First of all, she event to her moth-
er's minister. Would he; in honor of
all mothers, hold a memor{al service
on the anniversary of her mother's
death? And' would he invite all who
attended to wear a white carnation.
And in the spring of 1908,- in a mod' -
est church in Philadelphia, was inau-
gurated Mother's Day.
It grew; it spread to other coun-
tries. It is still growing. In 1914
President Wilson proclaimed .it, a na-
tional day for the honoring of moth-
ers, and set apart the second Sunday
in May- for its observance. It ;out-
grew the supply of -white carnations,
and the edict went out, ""WWar any
flower you wish."
In 1017 a Canadian soldier,

of the custom: "Every 'last one of
